Social Engineering: 65% of Crypto Cases in 2025, Says AMLBot

In 2025, social engineering emerged as the dominant method of crypto fraud, accounting for 65% of incidents investigated by AMLBot. This trend highlights the growing threat of human manipulation over technical vulnerabilities in the digital asset space.

Social Engineering’s Rise in Crypto Fraud

AMLBot’s recent report reveals that out of 2,500 investigated crypto cases in 2025, a staggering 65% were linked to social engineering tactics. This shift underscores the increasing reliance of fraudsters on exploiting human behavior rather than technical flaws. Investment scams led the charge, comprising 25% of all cases, followed by phishing attacks at 18% and device breaches at 13%.

Implications for the Crypto Industry

The prevalence of social engineering in crypto fraud has significant implications for investors and the industry at large. The economic impact is substantial, with AMLBot attributing at least $9 million in stolen assets to impersonation schemes in just three months. January 2025 witnessed losses of $370 million due to crypto scams, with phishing attacks accounting for $311 million.

Industry Reactions and Comparisons

Slava Demchuk, CEO of AMLBot, emphasized the deceptive nature of these attacks, often involving impersonations of trusted figures like exchange support teams and investment partners. This trend contrasts with previous years where technical exploits were more prevalent, highlighting a shift in fraud strategies.

Future Outlook and Risks

As we move forward, the crypto industry must focus on enhancing user education and implementing platform-level safeguards against social engineering. While technical security remains vital, the human factor is increasingly the weakest link. Vigilance and adherence to strict security protocols will be essential in safeguarding digital assets.

Looking ahead, the ongoing battle between fraudsters and the crypto community will likely intensify, with social engineering continuing to pose a formidable challenge.
