EU Banks Launch MiCA-Compliant Euro Stablecoin Backed 1:1

Qivalis, a consortium of major European Union banks, is set to introduce a MiCA-compliant euro-pegged stablecoin in the latter half of the year. This development could significantly alter the stablecoin landscape, currently dominated by U.S. dollar tokens, by offering a regulated euro-denominated alternative.

What Happened?

Qivalis, which comprises ING, UniCredit, BNP Paribas, CaixaBank, and BBVA, is planning to launch a euro-pegged stablecoin backed 1:1 by bank deposits and euro-area sovereign bonds. This initiative aims to provide a regulated option for euro-based blockchain transactions, reducing reliance on dollar-pegged tokens.

Why Does It Matter?

With dollar-pegged stablecoins currently leading in global crypto liquidity, the introduction of a euro stablecoin by major EU banks could shift the balance. This move supports EU strategic autonomy in digital finance by enabling euro-based blockchain payments, thus decreasing dependence on U.S.-issued tokens.

Competitive Context and Reactions

The stablecoin will be available on regulated trading venues from day one, with Qivalis in talks with exchanges and liquidity providers. While competition from established dollar stablecoins remains intense, the EU-backed initiative aims to capitalize on regulatory compliance and institutional backing.

Investor Takeaway

What’s Next?

Qivalis seeks authorization from the Dutch central bank under the MiCA framework, which outlines requirements for stablecoin issuers in the EU. The success of the euro stablecoin will hinge on liquidity, exchange adoption, and integration into corporate payment systems.

As MiCA comes into force, the latter half of the year will test whether the EU can establish a robust on-chain euro infrastructure alongside the dominant dollar ecosystem.
