maLeK to depart Evil Geniuses

Date:

The North American organization will be looking for new coaching staff.

After just over five months with Evil Geniuses, Damien “maLeK” Marcel is set to leave his position as head coach, the organization announced on Tuesday. While the 36-year-old Frenchman remains contracted to the team and will be exploring further options, other members of the coaching staff Paolo “EVY” Berbudeau and Juan “Hepa” Borges have been released.

Despite overhauling their CS:GO lineup at the start of the year, Evil Geniuses was not able to improve upon their poor performances during 2021. The final nail in the coffin for this lineup was their failure to qualify for the PGL Antwerp 2022 Major, with failures to qualify for IEM Dallas and the BLAST Spring finals coming shortly after.

maLeK will return to the drawing board

After serving as the head coach of G2 for three years, maLeK found himself eventually departing the team during the post-PGL Stockholm roster shuffle as ex-Vitality coach Rémy “XTQZZZ” Quoniam came in to replace him. He joined up with Evil Geniuses in December with the aim of helping them to rebuild their roster following their failures at the end of last year.

As for the assisting staff, EVY had also previously worked with maLeK in G2 while Hepa had been working as an analyst for Liquid in the latter half of 2021, but departed that squad pending their own roster overhaul. In their statement, Evil Geniuses promised additional information regarding the future of the team in the coming weeks.

Here is Evil Geniuses:

United States Vincent “Brehze” Cayonte
Bulgaria Tsvetelin “CeRq” Dimitrov
United States Jake “Stewie2K” Yip
United States Timothy “autimatic” Ta
United States William “RUSH” Wierzba

France Damien “maLeK” Marcel (Inactive coach)
