The Anaheim Ducks opened their April by defeating the Flames 5-3 Tuesday.
Owen Zellweger had three assists for the Ducks. Alex Killorn added two goals. Troy Terry had three points with a goal and two assists. Cam Fowler and Mason McTavish added a goal each as well. Lukas Dostal picked up the win in net.
For the Flames it was Andrei Kuzmenko scoring twice and then Yegor Shrangovich scoring the other goal. Nazeem Kadri, MacKenzie Weegar and Martin Pospisil all added two assists on the night.
In the first period it was Mason McTavish getting the scoring started. At 14:03 into the period he would tip in an Owen Zellweger slapshot to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead that they would hold into the first buzzer.
Calgary would strike right back in the second. 2:30 into the second after winning a draw in the Duck’s zone Nazeem Kadri would fire a slap shot from the top of the zone and Yegor Shrangovich would tip it in past Dostal. Making it a 1-1 game.
Then at 10:26 Andrei Kuzemko would give the Flames their only lead of the night. Kuzemko would skate right past the Ducks defense giving him a one on one with Lukas Dostal and he put the puck right through Dostal’s five whole to make things 2-1 in favor of Calgary.
However, at 13:36 into the period Troy Terry would tie things up on the power play with his 20th goal of the season.
The two teams would begin the third period tied 2-2.
Less than two minutes into the period Cam Fowler would break the tie. The Ducks would take advantage of a center ice turnover and Trevor Zegras slid the puck back to Fowler at the top of the zone and his wrist shot would find twine for the 3-2 lead.
Just over three minutes later Alex Killorn would score, giving the Ducks a 4-2 lead.
Calgary would claw back with another Kuzmenko goal to tie things, but Alex Killorn would put the final nail in the coffin with his second goal of the night giving the Ducks the 5-3 win.
Anaheim played arguably one of their best games since the All-Star break Tuesday evening. They outshot the Flames 29-24 something they have not done a whole lot this season. The power play unit scored on their lone opportunity of the night.
Most importantly Anaheim stayed out of the penalty box for the most part with only four minutes of penalty time which is over two minutes under their average. The PK unit went one for two on the night, not perfect, but enough to win.
The win snaps a five game losing streak for the Ducks
The teams have each beaten one another once already this season and will decide the season series on the 12th.
