Devils Make Small Depth Signing With Cal Foote

Date:

The New Jersey Devils signed defenseman Cal Foote to a one-year, two-way contract on Wednesday.

This was made official by the team.

Foote, 24, was the 14th overall pick in the 2017 NHL draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning. His career hasn’t gone well. In 141 total NHL games, he only has 5 goals and 14 assists for 19 points. In the 2022-23 season in Nashville, he had 1 goal and 3 assists for 4 points in 24 games. For a former first-round pick, he hasn’t been productive. His xGF% was a ghastly 40.3%, so his underlying metrics are also underwhelming.

His analytical models are also dreadful, overall.

Fortunately for the Devils, Cal Foote was probably brought in as a depth piece for when a left-shot defenseman gets hurt. He has professional experience, that’s good enough.

He’s also the brother of current Devil Nolan Foote, who has a shot at making the roster. The Devils could potentially be the only team in the league to have two sets of brothers in the lineup at some point this season.
