Amarius Mims 2024 NFL Draft Profile

Date:

The 2024 NFL Draft will be a great event for teams to start building for their future. Here is the Amarius Mims 2024 NFL Draft Profile.

Amarius Mims Background

Position: Offensive Tackle

School: Georgia

Size: 6-foot-7, 340 pounds

Class: Junior

2023 stats: Played in seven games due to injury

Mims didn’t get too many reps at the college level, but did well enough when he was on the field. He is now in the 2024 NFL Draft.

As a five-star recruit in the class of 2021, Mims decided to stay in his home state of Georgia and play for the Bulldogs. He played in eight games as a freshman in a reserve role. In 2022, he continued as a reserve, but started in the CFP against Ohio State and TCU. His play helped the Bulldogs win the national championship that season. He was a full-time starter in 2023, but was only able to play in seven games due to a high-ankle sprain. When he was on the field, he was impressive and Georgia went 13-1 with a win over Florida State in the Orange Bowl.

Following the season, Mims decided to forego the rest of his eligibility and declare for the draft. He is currently projected to be a first-round pick.

Amarius Mims Strengths

Mims has the prototypical size for an NFL offensive tackle. He stands at 6-foot-7 and 340 pounds, which will make him one of the biggest players in the class. With his size, comes great length, which he uses to neutralize defensive linemen and sustain blocks. His size also gives him a strength advantage over defensive players. He has a good anchor in pass protection to stall oncoming pass rushers.

For his size, Mims moves very well. He is able to get to the second level with good quickness at the snap of the ball. In addition to moving well forward, Mims showed the ability to move laterally. He can mirror pass rushers to stay in front. He also has solid flexibility to deal with bendy edge rushers.

While he doesn’t have much experience, he did get reps at both right and left tackle. That versatility will make a good fit for a lot of different teams. He could start at right tackle before developing enough to be trusted to protect the quarterback’s blindside.

Amarius Mims Weaknesses

Lack of experience is going to be the first thing people note about Mims. He started at the end of 2022, but just for two games. In 2023, he started just seven games, missing time with a high ankle sprain. With just nine total starts at the college level, he is way less experienced than other players in the class.

One of the ways his inexperience shows is with his hands. His hand placement can be off, as he can get his hands too wide. He can also have late hands, which will allow defenders to get into him. Mims has strong hands, so if he works on the timing and placement this could be a strength. He also punches with two hands and needs to show independent hand usage.

There are a few things he can clean up from a footwork perspective as well. He needs to keep a good base, as he loses his balance at times. Connecting his feet to his hands will help. Mims also stops his feet instead of driving through defenders. Showing more of a drive to finish blocks can really see him improve as well.
