$16B Chinese Crypto Laundering Network Active by 2025: Study

Chinese-language money laundering networks (CMLNs) have reportedly processed $16.1 billion in illegal cryptocurrency transactions in 2025, according to a recent blockchain analysis. This significant figure highlights the growing sophistication of organized crime groups in utilizing digital assets for money laundering.

What Happened?

Chainalysis, a blockchain intelligence company, revealed that Chinese-speaking crime syndicates handled a substantial portion of illegal crypto activities last year. Over 1,799 active wallets within these networks processed nearly $44 million in illicit crypto daily. The networks primarily facilitated scams, ransomware attacks, human trafficking, and fraud operations across Southeast Asia.

Why Does It Matter?

These activities represent about one-fifth of the total illegal crypto transactions, estimated at over $82 billion in 2025. The report underscores the increasing role of digital currencies in global money laundering, emphasizing the need for greater scrutiny of Chinese-language OTC and Telegram-based services.

Reactions and Comparisons

Chainalysis identified six key laundering methods, including high-volume brokers and new “Black U-style” brokers. The networks cater to a diverse clientele, from organized crime groups to banned businesses, amplifying concerns about their impact on global financial systems.

What’s Next?

Regulators and law enforcement are increasingly concerned about the use of platforms like Telegram and stablecoins, which complicate detection efforts. As cryptocurrency adoption grows, enhanced oversight of these networks is essential to mitigate cross-border financial crime.

Looking ahead, the crypto industry must adapt to these challenges by implementing stronger compliance measures and fostering collaboration with regulators to safeguard the ecosystem.
