Steve Kerr ‘Fully Expects’ to be Coaching the Golden State Warriors Beyond 2024

Date:

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr addressed the media Monday afternoon regarding the current state of the team. Additionally, reporters asked Kerr about his expiring contract and his future with the Warriors.

Kerr has been the head coach of the Golden State Warriors since the 2015 season. He’s helped lead the team to six finals appearances (including five straight) and four championships overall. With a new general manager in the Warriors’ front office and an aging core of players, the question remains whether this season is Kerr’s last dance.

Steve Kerr’s Winning Pedigree

Coach Kerr has always been a winner, not just as a coach but also as a player. Kerr had a three-peat with the Chicago Bulls from 1996 to 1998 as well as two championships with the San Antonio Spurs in 1999 and 2003.

As a player and coach, Kerr has nine total championships, an accomplishment nearly unmatched in any sport. Kerr was highly instrumental in the Warriors’ championship runs.

His offensive schemes turned Stephen Curry into an MVP, while Kerr’s smallball lineups turned Draymond Green into a two-way force. Curry and Draymond likely would not have had their career success without Kerr’s game-changing systems.

Of course Klay Thompson greatly benefited from Kerr’s system too. Thompson has gotten the easiest looks of his career and broke out into an all-star from Kerr’s movement-heavy offense.

Kerr has won everywhere he’s been as a player and coach. He just knows how to win, the sacrifices it takes, and the selflessness that goes into it. Learning from legendary coaches Phil Jackson and Greg Popovich definitely impacted Kerr’s coaching success.

A Players’ Coach

NBA players greatly enjoy playing for Steve Kerr. He has a relatability and competitiveness that resonates with many. Kerr’s championship experience and productive NBA career make him a great mentor and teacher to learn from.

Kerr has specifically developed a close relationship with Stephen Curry, which has been key to the Warriors’ success. The fact that Kerr and Curry get along so well makes both their jobs that much easier.

Klay Thompson and Draymond Green have also benefited immensely from Kerr’s relatability. Thompson and Green fully trust Kerr’s decision making and embrace the tough conversations.

This player-coach dynamic was demonstrated best during Green’s suspension in the 2023 playoffs. The Warriors found a lineup combination that worked without Green in the starting lineup, so he was asked to come off the bench. Not only did Green willingly trust Coach Kerr and come off the bench, but he embraced the opportunity and helped the Warriors get a crucial game four victory.

Coach Kerr has an ability to connect with players that is unique and effective. Without Kerr’s profound relationships with Curry, Thompson and Green, the Warriors would probably have never been a dynasty.

Kerr’s Future in Golden State

Considering that Curry and Green’s contracts are lined up for the next three seasons, it seems evident that Coach Kerr will be resigned as well. Resigning Thompson will also be another financial hurdle for the Warriors, but it’s hard to see Curry and Green ever playing without Thompson and Kerr there as well.

Since Kerr expressed practically no levels of his concern in his press conference, so it’s safe to say he’ll be the Warriors’ coach for the foreseeable future. He doesn’t mind coaching on an expiring contract, which should alleviate any looming concerns about his coaching future. As long as Curry is a Warrior, Kerr will likely be the Warriors’ head coach.

Extremely confident that a deal will get done, Kerr “fully expects” to be the Warriors’ head coach beyond 2024.
