Osso VR Aims to Develop Advanced VR Surgery Simulations to Train Surgeons and Medical Professionals, Raises $27 million for the Project

Osso VR has reportedly raised a total of $27 million for their ambitious project of virtual reality surgery simulation. This VR simulation will be used to provide hands-on training for surgeons, nurses, and other medical professionals. 

 

The San Francisco-based VR tech company Osso VR stated that numerous hospitals around the country have validated their VR surgical assessment and training platform as an effective training tool for medical professionals. To enhance the platform further, the company has now undertaken a novel venture and set out to raise funding for the same. The second round of institutional funding is reportedly led by GSR Ventures. Companies such as SignalFire, OCA Ventures, Kaiser Permanent Ventures, Leslie Ventures, Scrum Ventures, and Anorak Ventures have also participated in the process.

Hands on training

The Surgical training tech by Osso VR provides hands-on training and educational experiences for surgeons. The resources are said to be measurable, repeatable, and effective that explicitly helps medical professionals reach desired proficiency with various types of emerging medical techniques as well as technologies, the press release from the company stated. Currently, the company works with several healthcare industry giants such as Johnson & Johnson, Smith & Nephew, and Stryker.

Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, Osso VR’s VR tech grew rapidly to meet the rising demand for VR training. As part of this recent growth, Osso VR has expanded its repertoire into further specialties, including endoscopy, orthopedics, as well as interventional procedures. Currently, the company has over 10 specialties and 120 modules in its surgical training library.

Sunny Kumar, one of the partners in GSR Ventures, stated that Osso VR has notably poised to change the way surgeons and medical technicians are trained on new surgical procedures and devices. Osso VR’s technology provides such a level of immersive experience that truly mirrors the operating room environment, making it more accessible, efficient, and effective for trainees. 

High visual fidelity

The brand-new VR tech from Osso VR offers high visual fidelity that ensures every aspect of the surgical procedure, ranging from OR environment to anatomical detail, takes an active part in enhancing the accuracy of the training. To this end, the company employs the largest medical illustration alums and teams, including Apple, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, and Industrial Light & Magic. 

Over 30.000 training sessions

To date, over 30,000 training sessions have been completed on Osso VR’s training platform, spanning an average of 22,000 minutes of surgical training in a single month. Considering the statistics, the company claims that the VR training platform has been instrumental to improve surgical performances. 

Osso VR is currently available in over 20 countries. It is also available in various languages, including English, Spanish, Japanese, French, and German. Further, the top 5 orthopedic devices companies are also reportedly using OSSO VR as their virtual training platform. Notable universities and hospital residency programs, such as John Hopkins, Brown University, Hospital for Special Surgery, and Rush University are also using Osso VR.
