Welcome to the High Score Esports College Players Interview Series!
Today, we’re talking to Taylor “GoldZone” Borchers, who plays on the Rocket League team for Aquinas Esports. See how he got started, how he leads his team to victory, and what tips he has for players who want to join college teams!
Thanks to Aquinas Esports Head Coach Adam Antor for giving us access to his players!
What first got you into games?
My brothers. They put the first controller in my hand from the beginning. That was my first memory of gaming. I came to find out it was unplugged the entire time…
What drew you to Rocket League?
I first saw it for free on the PlayStation store many years ago. After experimenting with the game for a while, I became extremely addicted to it. It ended up paying off.
Do you prefer to play a more defensive style or an aggressive style? Why?
I often play whatever is needed. I prefer to adapt to my teammates.
What do you see as your team’s main advantage?
I think our team plays at an extremely fast pace. What separates us from the competition is when we play at our speed.
What advice do you have for younger players who are hoping to join a college team?
Follow your passion. If you are extremely passionate about video games, then follow it as far as you can take it.
When you’re not practicing Rocket League or studying, what games do you play?
Baseball. I have played baseball since I was 6 years old. Since I play at Aquinas, most of my time is taken up by both esports and baseball.
