Filipino-American rapper and entrepreneur Apl.de.ap recently collaborated with Filipino artist Bitto to create a phygital art collection. The pieces will be made available in partnership with GCash’s in-app crypto platform GCrypto, local non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace Likha, and art gallery Vinyl on Vinyl.

“Phygital” refers to a marketing and retail concept where physical and digital experiences are seamlessly integrated.

Apl.de.ap x Bitto Phygital Art

According to the Likha website, the Apl x Bitto Phygital Art Launch is an exclusive collaboration between the two artista. The collection is noted to blend Apl’s music influence with Bitto’s contemporary style.

In addition, the announcement noted that these phygital pieces will also include a digital Certificate of Authenticity (COA) to ensure encrypted and on-chain authentication. 

“We’re blending the physical and digital worlds, creating something totally new. For collectors, it means owning art in a cool, secure way with digital certificates. For artists, it’s a chance to explore new distribution channels and reach people like never before.”

This will be the second collection under GCrypto x Likha x Vinyl-on-Vinyl, following the release of “House of Ohlala” by artist Reen Barrera in 2023.

Currently, interested collectors may pre-order silkscreen prints and sculptures, while other pieces, such as the custom sculptures and paintings for auction, will be available exclusively during the launch event.

Launch

Accordingly, the collection will be launched in person at Apotheka, Makati, on January 18, 2024. It will be a charity-event set to benefit the the Apl De Ap Foundation.

Attendees will have the chance to own a one-of-one Bitto painting through an exclusive auction. 

In addition, through the invite-only auction, attendees can also acquire limited edition sculptures and silkscreen prints by Bitto, enjoy an exclusive preview of APL’s latest single, “Turnaround,” and take home Apl x Bitto merchandise as memorabilia. 

Original artworks purchased during the event will be autographed by Apl.de.Ap and Bitto, according to a statement.

The Artists

Apl.de.ap

Apl.de.ap gained global prominence as a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning hip-hop group, The Black Eyed Peas. Beyond his musical contributions, Apl is acknowledged for his philanthropic endeavors, notably advocating for education and healthcare initiatives in the Philippines.

In 2021, he released an exclusive NFT in partnership with Filipino artist AJ Dimarucot and CG artist Tom Coben that featured four unique digital works accompanied by music from his releases. A portion of the proceeds from the NFT went to the First Mint Fund, a crypto fund by the Narra Art Gallery.

In 2022, Apl.de.ap collaborated with Sevi, a young artist with autism, during the Philippine Web3 Festival where they released an NFT painting featuring a vibrant carabao against a “rainbow rain” backdrop.

Bitto

Bitto is a self-taught artist, illustrator, and muralist associated with Studio Bitto. He is acknowledged as a rising star known for his distinctive use of bold colors and patterns, often incorporating human and animal-hybrid characters as recurring subjects in his art. 

His art have been recognized by various brands, such as Bench, Shake Shack, Fjallraven, Nike, and GCash, which have featured his works.
