Advocates see it as the evolution of the internet, a 3D virtual world where digital representations of ourselves, or avatars, can freely navigate different experiences with our identities and assets intact.

The idea of a digital realm parallel to real life is not new, but recent technological advancements have made the metaverse concept more plausible. From widespread use of mobile phones and high-speed internet to popular games like Pokémon Go, the metaverse seems closer than ever.

Substantial investment in metaverse technologies, the rise of online gaming, AI breakthroughs, and the shift towards remote work and socializing due to the COVID-19 pandemic have accelerated tech innovation and user adoption of virtual interactions.

In November 2021, Facebook rebranded as Meta and pledged $10 billion to develop virtual experiences, fueling excitement about the metaverse as the future computing platform. Bill Gates even predicted that meetings would transition from screens to the metaverse within a few years, although this enthusiasm may be premature.
