College Football Playoff Bracketology September 5

Date:

Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and defeated already on the field. Preseason rankings will not be taken into consideration here. Here is College Football Playoff Bracketology September 5.

CFP Four

1. Florida State Seminoles (1-0)

Florida State had the biggest win in week 1 when they defeated fifth-ranked LSU 45-24. The preseason expectations were high for the Seminoles and they delivered, earning their spot as the top team.

This week: vs. Southern Miss Golden Eagles (1-0)

2. Duke Blue Devils (1-0)

On the Monday night game of week 1, Duke hosted Clemson and pulled off an upset, winning 28-7. Clemson looks like they have their fair share of offensive issues, but Duke still gets credit for beating a top-10 team and for doing it by a wide margin.

This week: vs. Lafayette Leopards (FCS)

3. Colorado Buffaloes (1-0)

Deion Sanders worked quicker than expected at Colorado. He picked up a very impressive win on the road in week 1, as the Buffaloes outlasted the TCU Horned Frogs 45-42. While TCU lost a lot of talent from last year’s team, Colorado still deserves credit for going on the road and beating a ranked team.

This week: vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers (0-1)

4. North Carolina Tar Heels (1-0)

In week 1, the Tar Heels won a neutral site game over South Carolina, 31-17. What is encouraging about the win is their defense looks much improved this season. They beat a quality opponent and can take an early spot in the top four.

This week: vs. Appalachian State Mountaineers (1-0)

First Four Out

5. Utah Utes (1-0)

Utah had a rematch with Florida for their week 1 matchup. The Utes had a backup quarterback in, but still won the game 24-11. After going to two straight Rose Bowls, things are looking bright for the Utes.

This week: at Baylor Bears (0-1)

6. Washington Huskies (1-0)

Washington had a tricky week 1 game against Boise State. They passed the first test of the season with flying colors, winning 56-19. The Pac-12 had a big opening week and the Huskies are right there with the most impressive teams.

This week: vs. Tulsa Golden Hurricane (1-0)

7. Houston Cougars (1-0)

Houston won a tough game over UTSA 17-14. The Roadrunners were a popular pick to make a New Year’s Six Bowl as a group of five representatives and still could do so this season, making it a good win for the Cougars.

This week: at Rice Owls (0-1)

8. Texas State Bobcats (1-0)

Texas State has had some tough years, but got a huge win in G.J. Kinne’s first year at the helm. They upset Baylor on the road. While Baylor wasn’t ranked, they made a bowl game last season and Texas State getting the road win helps earn a spot on this list.

This week: at UTSA Roadrunners (0-1)

Next Four Out

9. Wyoming Cowboys (1-0)

Wyoming had Texas Tech at home for their opening game of the season and they won in double overtime. It was an exciting game and getting a win over a Power Five conference team is one of the best early wins of the season.

This week: vs. Portland State Vikings (FCS)

10. Fresno State Bulldogs (1-0)

Purdue paid Fresno State to come play them in West Lafayette. The Bulldogs were able to leave with a victory for an impressive road win. Fresno State lost a lot from last season, but started off the new season on a high note.

This week: vs. Eastern Washington Eagles (FCS)

11. Penn State Nittany Lions (1-0)

Penn State played West Virginia in week 1 and were able to pull away from the Mountaineers in the second half, winning 38-15. The Nittany Lions have a chance, more so than some others, to stay on this list for the long haul this season after a good start.

This week: vs. Delaware Blue Hens (FCS)

12. NC State Wolfpack (1-0)

The Wolfpack had a week 1 road game against UConn and came out on top, 24-14. NC State got a road win over a team that went to a bowl game last season, so for now they can hold the last spot in the rankings, while other teams build their resumes up.

This week: vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (2-0)
