  • ChatGPT’s monthly record of web traffic dropped by 9.7% in June, the first-ever decline in the number of platform visitors in a month.
  • However, ChatGPT’s current issue does not only revolve around this data but even in a number of reports of its users that the chatbot is allegedly getting dumber since its launch.
  • According to a Reddit user, this issue could be because of OpenAI probably trying to minimize negative outputs and misinformation on the chatbot.

May 2023 has been a prosperous month for ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI chatbot tool, as it has recorded about 1.8 billion visits through desktop and mobile web.

But the chatbot’s monthly record of web traffic dropped by 9.7% in June, the first-ever decline in the number of platform visitors in a month. In addition, ChatGPT’s unique visitors and the amount of time users spend on the site have also declined by 5.7% and 8.5%, respectively.

However, ChatGPT’s current issue does not only revolve around this data but even in a number of reports of its users that the chatbot is allegedly getting dumber since its launch.

Issue #1:  Is ChatGPT Becoming Dumber?

In a Reddit post, a user expressed that though he is asking the same prompts everyday, ChatGPT always responds with less and lesser quality, claiming that the chatbot has been “100% nerfed.”

“I make basic marketing websites for a living, I literally reuse the same prompts over and over, on the same topics, and it’s performance at the same tasks has markedly decreased.”

This claim was seconded by another user, saying that “I don’t use it every day, but I do use it a couple times a week to help with excel formulas or SQL queries. And it’s definitely gotten dumber.”

This incident is matched with another Reddit post, stating that before, ChatGPT can perform longer perform spreadsheet calculations, but today, it just gives the step on how to perform these calculations in Excel instead.

Issue #2: The Decrease in ChatGPT’s Coding IQ

Meanwhile, other users also pointed out that ChatGPT has been getting confused about the programming languages it knows before.

Collectively, users expressed disappointment as when they ask ChatGPT about something that has to do with code, the chatbot supplies answers that are irrelevant and not cohesive to the context.

Moreover, another user shared his observation about this issue: The longer the conversation gets the more errors it begins making.

“Even with a relatively simple python script of only about 150 lines when I start asking it to tweak this and that at some point it just turns incredibly dumb. It starts making random changes all of a sudden, doing things I never asked it to do, introducing seemingly random things that almost seem like they must come from some other conversation with someone else.”

Potential Reasons for ChatGPT’s Intelligence Drop

In a now-deleted Reddit post, one of the replies tried to explain why these issues are happening:

“They are constantly changing it and lately they’ve made it worse. Probably trying to minimize negative outputs and misinformation, but effectively neutered it.”

Meanwhile, another wilder guess has been replied to:

“My best guess is they’re in the process of watering down their models so they can charge extra for ChatGPTPremiumPlus when GPT-5 launches.”

And because of this “Dumber GPT” issue, a Reddit user suggested that maybe, it is now time to find large language models (LLMs), or AI chatbots, that will flourish in open-source.

“It’s time to start investing those hours everyday into some of the weaker but actually open source LLMs instead of giving your time and energy away to a proprietary company that’s main goal is to maintain regulatory control over the industry and maximize profits at the expense of its own utility.”

Lastly, most users in the thread are advising others that these issues might exist in ChatGPT’s free version, so to get away with these issue, just subscribe to the Plus plan.
