Stroud played two great seasons for Ohio State, putting up impressive numbers. He has now entered the 2023 NFL Draft.

Out of high school, Stroud was a four-star recruit who left his home state of California to play for the Buckeyes. He redshirted his first year on campus in 2020, but did play in one game. As a redshirt freshman, Stroud had a shaky start, but finished the season extremely well. He passed for 4,435 yards, 44 touchdowns and six interceptions on 71.9 percent completion. His play helped Ohio State win the Rose Bowl. In 2022, the Buckeyes were able to make the College Football Playoff behind Stroud’s 3,688 passing yards, 41 passing touchdowns and six interceptions on 66.3 percent completion.

Following a classic College Football Playoff game, Stroud has decided to go to the next level. He is a projected top-10 pick.

C.J. Stroud Strengths

Stroud’s best trait is his accuracy. He can hit targets in the short-range, intermediate or deep parts of the field. Stroud can drop the ball perfectly into his receivers’ hands. His deep ball accuracy is excellent, as he can put it right over defenders. He can fit balls into tight windows with his good anticipation and throws receivers open. Stroud also usually gives receivers a good opportunity to run after the catch, although sometimes his release can be rushed which changes that.

His pre-snap recognition is great and he matches up with the best in the class. He can read the defense well and then make adjustments. Stroud knows where blitzers are coming from and what coverages he is facing. This helps him carve up zone coverage and find the best matchup when defenses play man to man against his receivers.

He has good arm strength, which allows him to make any throw required of an NFL quarterback. Stroud can push the ball downfield to stretch defenses vertically. He also has the ability to get a lot of velocity on his throws, which helps him get receivers the ball even when defenders are surrounding them. His arm strength won’t be among the best in the draft class, but he still has a solid arm.

C.J. Stroud Weaknesses

Stroud doesn’t have a deep history of making plays out of structure, as he prefers to make passes from the pocket. When he does get pushed from the pocket, his accuracy suffers. He wasn’t a threat to run the ball very much at Ohio State, but Stroud did use his legs against Georgia in the College Football Playoff and it opened up the offense. His running won’t be featured very often in the NFL.

At times, Stroud can leave the pocket too early when he feels pressure. He also can get happy feet in the pocket. Stroud can feel pressure decently well, but can get rid of the ball too easily when the pressure is getting near him. There are some inaccurate throws that come out of these situations.

His throws can sometimes have a little bit of a windup to them. On top of that, his feet can be more consistent on his dropbacks. He will need to improve his footwork because his arm talent is solid, but not good enough to overcome it when his feet aren’t set. There are times when he rushes throws too, which really throws off his accuracy and limits the ability of the receiver to run after the catch.
