A key contributor to Bitcoin Core, Dhruvkaran Mehta, has announced exiting from the project to work on a new Bitcoin-based startup idea, as reported by Investor Bites. As is obvious, he wants to invest his best efforts into it and give it his all.
I’ve decided to not pursue another year of #Bitcoin Core open source grants. Given the public nature of my work on BIP324, I want to lay out my thinking in this thread:

An open-source project, Bitcoin Core, depends on stipends, grants, and its contributors’ goodwill. Mehta was a paid volunteer who was funded by grants from Jack Dorsey’s Block’s subsidiary Spiral. Block focuses on funding the development of Bitcoin, Gemini, and the Human Rights Foundation.
In August 2020, Mehta started working for Bitcoin Core and worked on improving the P2P protocol of Bitcoin via Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 324 (BIP324). The P2P protocol administers the communication taking place between the network’s nodes. Currently, the communication is public and not encrypted; hence, the network is open to several attacks and sensitivities.
BIP324 curbs the possibilities of these attacks by launching the P2P protocol’s version that encrypts messages between nodes of Bitcoin.
Mehta didn’t discuss his startup idea; however, he has exposure to the startup world. He introduced Outbound in 2013, which is a messaging platform that made $2.2 million and, in 2017, was acquired by Zendesk.
BIP324 is a sweeping project, and Mehta was rebasing frequently, which made him feel tedious to an extent. Moreover, he was at odds with certain development cultures.
Appreciating the grantors for their generosity, he shared how they gave him the chance to do his life’s most meaningful work.
From now on, BIP324 will be managed by @pwuille, who will take over the PRs starting with his #27479.
Mehta wrapped up by sharing that the best thing about Bitcoin is the determined individuals around it. He thanked everyone who showed him reasons to be positive about the future they are building for the coming generations.
