2023 Myrtle Beach Bowl Preview

Date:

The 2023 Myrtle Beach Bowl features the 6-6 Georgia Southern Eagles against the 9-3 Ohio Bobcats. Here is the 2023 Myrtle Beach Bowl Preview.

Georgia Southern Eagles (6-6)

Clay Helton’s team finished the season with a 6-6 record. They have lost four straight games, but were able to defeat two bowl-eligible teams this season: Coastal Carolina and Georgia State. All of their losses were to bowl-eligible teams.

The Eagles are ranked 45th in scoring offense at 30.9 points per game. They pass for 298.2 yards (ranked 14th) and rush for 124.2 yards per game (ranked 101st).

Tulsa transfer Davis Brin has started at quarterback this year for Georgia Southern. He has passed for 3,431 yards, 22 touchdowns and 16 interceptions on 64.7 percent completion. Five pass-catchers have registered over 200 yards on the season for the Eagles. Khaleb Hood has been the top target with 94 catches for 917 yards and five touchdowns.

The Eagles have two running backs who get the bulk of the workload out of the backfield. Jalen White leads the team in rushing with 159 carries for 891 yards and nine touchdowns. O.J. Arnold has helped with 70 carries for 405 yards and four touchdowns.

Their defense ranks 94th in the country, as they give up 29.58 points per game. They concede 155.5 rushing yards (ranked 75th) and 244.1 passing yards per game (ranked 102nd). Linebacker Marques Watson-Trent leads the team with 111 total tackles. Defensive lineman Isaac Walker has a team-high six sacks. Shemar Bartholomew has impressed in the secondary with 13 passes defended and one interception.

Ohio Bobcats (9-3)

Ohio went 9-3 on the season with some good wins under their belts. They defeated two bowl-eligible teams including Iowa State. Their loss to San Diego State was the only one they suffered to a team that didn’t qualify for a bowl game.

Their offense scores 22.9 points per game, ranking them 98th in the country. The Bobcats rush for 137.1 yards (ranked 90th) and pass for 210.9 yards per game (ranked 85th).

Kurtis Rourke has played solidly at quarterback for Ohio. He has passed for 2,207 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions on 63.5 percent completion. Five pass catchers have at least 200 yards on the season. Sam Wiglusz has been the leading receiver with 50 catches for 600 yards and three touchdowns. Miles Cross wasn’t too far behind with 47 catches for 599 yards and five touchdowns, but he has entered the transfer portal.

Two running backs do most of the rushing for the Bobcats as well. Sieh Bangura is the top rusher with 178 carries for 811 yards and seven touchdowns. Behind him, O’Shaan Allison has contributed with 139 rushes for 452 yards and three touchdowns. Both players have entered the transfer portal so new players will need to step up.

Ohio has the fifth-best defense in the country, allowing just 15.4 points per game. They concede 96 rushing yards (ranked eighth) and 168.4 passing yards per game (ranked seventh). Linebacker Bryce Houston has been a great tackler, with 120 on the season. Shane Bonner and Rayyan Buell lead the team with 4.5 sacks. Justin Birchette has eight passes defended, while Houston has three interceptions.

Myrtle Beach Bowl Prediction

Ohio’s defense has been great all season long and even only allowed Iowa State to score seven points. They can slow down Georgia Southern’s passing attack enough. Kurtis Rourke should be able to make enough plays to get the Bobcats the win.
