‘The future of RTP:’ Horseshoe at HUB RTP celebrates groundbreaking on Tuesday

Date:

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – The Research Triangle Foundation is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony this week for “Horseshoe at the Hub,” a 125,000-square-foot mixed-use development project in RTP.

The Horseshoe complex is part of The Hub, the $1.5 billion, 100-acre project that will include two million square feet of office, residential, retail, and hotel space, as well as 14 acres of green space.

The Horseshoe at the Hub will include a central plaza, 100,000 square feet of office space, 25,000 square feet of retail space, and 1,200 residential units, according to Jan Mactal, Director of Marketing and Communications for RTF.

Mactal shared an exclusive preview of next week’s groundbreaking ceremony with WRAL TechWire.

“The groundbreaking, really, is to signify that Horseshoe is underway,” said Mactal in an exclusive interview.

Mactal also said that RTF will make announcements about the overall timeline for the Horseshoe at the Hub project specifically and for the Hub project overall.

“The biggest takeaway is that there’s momentum in the construction site, and that we’re finishing up infrastructure,” said Mactal. “But at the same time, we’re also supposed to break ground for residential as well.”

Horseshoe takes shape

The complex is being developed by White Point. White Point announced the name “Horseshoe at the Hub” last year, sharing that the name was inspired by the development’s horseshoe layout.

Mactal said that in addition to office, retail, and residential space, Horseshoe will also include an outdoor performance venue.

“We don’t know how that looks at the moment,” said Mactal, “but it’s right in the middle of Horseshoe. We plan to have recurring music, similar to Boxyard, but maybe on a different scale.”

RTP Renaissance

Mactal described the RTP as “going through a renaissance.”

“There’s a huge inflection point right now, at least from the time I’ve been with RTF,” said Mactal. “It’s always pushing the envelope to say, ‘We’re alive and we’re transforming with the rest of, not just the industry, but also the world.’”

She said that the Horseshoe at the Hub project represents RTF’s focus on creating “amenities” for RTP companies.

“The biggest thing for us, and it’s always been a part of our mission, is to uplift all North Carolinians. And we’ve done that in so many different stages along our history,” said Mactal. “Right now, we’re focusing on essentially building a culture and building up a gathering place for people to not just work, but to also live, to also stay, to play.”

“The Future of RTP”

Scott Levitan, President and CEO of RTF, said that the organization was making moves for the Hub project in early 2020.

“In true RTP tradition, in 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, the Board, Durham County, and leadership of RTF to a leap of faith to commit to investing $70M in site infrastructure so HUB would be ready-to-go and quick to deliver,” said Levitan in an exclusive interview. “It brings us much satisfaction to deliver on the promise we made to our 400 RTP companies, Durham County, and the stakeholders in the Triangle Region.”

Levitan said that the Horseshoe groundbreaking helps to show that the investment has “paid off.”

He also said that the overall Hub project represents an additional $400M in residential, lab, and hotel construction over the next 12 months.

“The future of RTP starts today,” said Levitan.

Groundbreaking on October 18th

The private groundbreaking ceremony for Horseshoe at the Hub will be held at the Hub RTP Construction Site off Modrich Boulevard in Durham on Tuesday, October 18th.
