The Telegram CEO named Pavel Durov recently went viral in the crypto regulation news for stating that the project’s digital resistance in Russia may contribute to further anti-censorship efforts, especially in countries such as China and Iran.
As Durov noted, Russia’s decision to lift its two-year Telegram ban is something that marks the beginning of a broader movement. This movement will protect privacy-oriented apps such as Telegram itself, the CEO noted.
In a statement which comes in direct response to Russian authorities who officially terminated the ban on the messaging app in the country from last week, the Telegram CEO comments the entire decision. He said that the company will not rest on its laurels and is planning more efforts for expanding in countries such as China and Iran.

According to Durov, the team at Telegram already started working on some anti-censorship tools in countries which have banned the application. He specifically said the following:
“We have decided to direct our anti-censorship resources into other places where Telegram is still banned by governments – places like Iran and China. We ask the admins of the former proxy servers for Russian users to focus their efforts on these countries.”
For those of you who did not follow our cryptocurrency news, it all started when the telecom watchdog in Russia, Roskomnadzor, started blocking Telegram in April 2018. However, the app remained accessible for users in Russia due to the Telegram team and its resistance of the ban through the use of proxy servers and other censorship tools.
“To put it simply, the ban didn’t work,” the Telegram CEO commented as he emphasized that the user base of the app in Russia has doubled since 2018.
The efforts to keep the app intact have also formed a movement called the “Digital Resistance” which stood behind the app and is the reason why Telegram stayed largely accessible in Russia, as the Telegram CEO Pavel Durov commented.
“The Digital Resistance movement doesn’t end with last week’s ceasefire in Russia. It is just getting started – and going global.”
In the end, Durov is aware that this digital resistance plans in countries such as China and Iran might be more challenging than the ones in Russia. China banned Telegram back in 2015 as part of the “great firewall policy” in the country, but the app is reportedly still accessible via VPN tools.
