O2 / Telefonica Germany and NEC Showcase Open RAN Capabilities with Germany’s First of its Kind Small Cells Deployment

TOKYO, Mar 2, 2022 - (JCN Newswire) - O2 / Telefonica Germany and NEC Corporation (TSE: 6701) announced their successful collaboration in launching the first Open and virtual RAN architecture-based small cells in Germany. The service has initially launched in the city center of Munich to enhance the customer experience by providing increased capacity to the existing mobile network in this dense, urban area.

NEC serves as the prime system integrator in the four countries of Telefonica S.A. and NEC's program to explore ways to apply Open RAN in various geographies (urban, sub-urban, rural) and use cases.

In this German deployment, the flexibility of Open RAN is leveraged through the use of small cells to improve capacity in dense, urban areas. One of the key advantages of Open RAN over a traditional architecture is that it allows wider choice of vendor options. NEC integrated a multi-vendor architecture that includes Airspan Networks Inc.'s* unique Airspeed plug-and-play solution and Rakuten Symphony's Open vRAN software for O2 / Telefonica Germany's small cells to complement the existing multi-vendor based macro cells in its network.

The adoption of Open RAN small cells combined with macro cells will pave the way for 5G densification. This will be especially beneficial in Germany, where multiple industries and enterprises are seeking ways to utilize cellular service functionalities in a particular area or in shared physical spaces.

O2 / Telefonica Germany and NEC will continue their collaboration leveraging innovative Open RAN technologies, as well as automation, to validate and deploy advanced networks that efficiently deliver superior customer experiences in the 5G era, with collaboration from key partners.

"We are proud to have launched Germany's first small cells built on innovative Open RAN technologies that help to complete the delivery of granular, high-quality connectivity in dense urban areas," said Matthias Sauder, Director Mobile Access & Transport at O2 / Telefonica Germany. "NEC became our partner in this innovative project, with its underlying technological background and experiences of Open RAN technologies."

"The potential of Open RAN technologies in the 5G era is infinite," said Shigeru Okuya, Senior Vice President, NEC Corporation. "NEC is honored to be the strategic partner to O2 / Telefonica Germany, jointly leading the industry with practical and effective use cases that prove the value of Open RAN."

Fujitsu Honored by the International Headache Society

TOKYO, Mar 2, 2022 - (JCN Newswire) - Fujitsu today announced that it was the first company in the world to be honored by the Global Patient Advocacy Coalition of the International Headache Society(1)(IHS-GPAC) as a world leader in migraine workplace awareness, education, and employee support programs.

Figure 1: Accreditation from IHS-GPAC to Fujitsu as "World Leader in Migraine Workplace Awareness, Education, and Employee Support Programs"

Figure 2: Estimated economic loss due to absence from work due to chronic headache disorders and decreased performance

Figure 3: Overview of the FUJITSU Headache Project

Chronic headache disorders, which include migraine, tension, and other chronic headache types, have a significant impact on daily life and work productivity. To address this problem, Fujitsu has developed and implemented training programs for employees globally in the workplace to promote awareness and treatment of headache disorders, as well as prevention programs for employees suffering from such disorders. Fujitsu's efforts were evaluated by the International Headache Society as a model case of corporate measures to support employees living with headache disorders.

As a leader in migraine workplace awareness, education, and employee support programs, Fujitsu will further promote the dissemination of information related to health measures including headache countermeasures not only for employees, but also to their families, customers, and business partners. Fujitsu anticipates that these efforts will encourage greater understanding and continue to provide employees with advanced support for headache disorders and a variety of other related health issues.

Background

In the workplace, chronic headache disorders tend to be trivialized due to a common lack of understanding. As a result, many employees that suffer from these disorders continue to work while enduring painful headaches and other severe symptoms, leading to a decline in productivity and quality of life (QOL).

In June 2018, Fujitsu conducted an in-house survey among Fujitsu employees in cooperation with International Headache Society, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Japan Headache Society. The survey was designed to evaluate the impacts of chronic headache disorders on their work. Of the 2,500 people surveyed, 85% had experienced headache disorders. Of those who experienced headache disorders, 84% had never been treated. In addition, it was found that the economic loss to Fujitsu due to headache disorder-related sick leave and lower performance was approx. 900 USD per year per chronic headache disorder-affected employee. The cost was even higher for those affected by migraine (approx. 2,300 USD). The total cost was approx. 197 million USD per year for all employees, representing approximately 1% of the total annual salary paid to all employees. It was also revealed that health related QOL scores(2) of employees with chronic headache disorders were lower than the national standard for Japan. This demonstrates that headache disorders have a significant impact on daily life and work productivity. To address this issue, Fujitsu launched the "FUJITSU Headache Project" as a headache disorder prevention program that is now globally available to all employees.

Outline of the "FUJITSU Headache Project"

Based on the results of a joint study conducted in 2018 (Fujitsu employee survey on the degree of impact of chronic headache disorders on work), Fujitsu in fiscal year 2019 developed the FUJITSU Headache Project in cooperation with IHS-GPAC and the Japanese Headache Society. Utilizing e-Learning programs to help Fujitsu Group employees in Japan acquire correct knowledge about headache disorders, Fujitsu held video seminars for headache patients, online headache consultations with specialists, and headache exercises. Through these initiatives to help employees with headache disorders, Fujitsu attempts to improve QOL and boost work productivity, and aims to create a workplace where people suffering from headache disorders can work comfortably and with peace of mind.

1. Project period: July 2019 to February 2022
2. Target: Approximately 70,000 Fujitsu Group employees in Japan
3. Content: e-Learning programs and on-demand video seminars, online headache consultations, etc.

Future plans

Based on the results of the various initiatives of the "FUJITSU Headache Project," Fujitsu, the IHS-GPAC, WHO, and the Japanese Headache Society will analyze and verify the impact of the Fujitsu Headache Project on the improved awareness and understanding of headache disorders among all employees, as well as changes in the burden and work productivity of employees with chronic headache disorders.

MHI Joins “ACT FOR SKY,” a voluntary organization working for the Commercialization, Promotion and Expansion of Domestically Produced SAF

TOKYO, Mar 2, 2022 - (JCN Newswire) - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) is pleased to announce that today it has joined "ACT FOR SKY," a voluntary organization established jointly by JGC Holdings Corporation Co.,Ltd., REVO International Inc. All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. and Japan Airlines Co.,Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, President: AKASAKA Yuji, Representative Director) that works to commercialize, promote and expand the use of domestically produced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)(1).

"ACT FOR SKY" with "ACT" representing the cooperation and collaboration by companies committed to take "action" for these goals-will aim to raise awareness among citizens and companies of the importance of SAF, carbon neutrality and achieving a circular economy. Applying expertise across relevant industries, the four founding companies will coordinate the activity of other member companies as well.

MHI is embarking on a project to develop a commercial-scale supply chain for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) derived by biomass gasification integrated with FT synthesis technology(2). By achieving reduction in greenhouse gas emissions caused by jet fuels, the Company will contribute to mitigating the aviation industry's impact on the global environment.

Background

- A rapidly growing global need to reduce CO2 emissions has called for the aviation industry to accelerate the development, production, distribution, and use of SAF. This fuel is sourced from sustainable resources such as tallow (animal oils and fats), used cooking oil (UCO), biomass, municipal solid waste, exhaust gases, and CO2.
- As global SAF demand grows, a stable supply of domestically produced SAF is considered essential in Japan. However, domestically produced SAF has not been commercialized yet, and establishing stable supply chain, from procurement of feedstock to supply of SAF, remains an urgent issue.
- Compared to Europe and the U.S, where SAF is already being commercialized, and its awareness is relatively strong, it is necessary to raise the awareness of SAF in Japan as well.

Overview of activities

- Promotion of the members' activities toward decarbonization and a circular economy through the domestic production of SAF
- Discussions and analysis on the costs to achieve these goals
- Raise awareness on carbon neutrality, through local governments and education
- Exchanging information among members, for next actions
- Share information on how other countries are acting for SAF promotion
- Identify common issues for domestic SAF production, and share the information and analysis gathered with related organizations

Specific member initiatives

ACT FOR SKY consists of the following 16 members (as of March 2, 2022).

"ACT" member companies: Companies/organizations directly involved in domestic SAF business
(founding companies in bold)

Future development

Along with a variety of other stakeholders, ACT FOR SKY will promote and expand the domestic production of SAF, which will lead to the development of aviation network in Japan and the industry related to SAF production. Together, we will establish a sustainable society.

(1) SAF is a fuel achieving significantly lower CO2 emissions compared to the conventional jet fuel over its life cycle, from production or collection of feedstock (such as biomass, used cooking oil, or exhaust gas) to manufacturing and combustion. Existing infrastructure can be used without modification.
(2) Gasification and FT (Fischer-Tropsch) synthesis technology: a technology whereby solid materials such as wood cellulose are reacted with water vapor and a small amount of oxygen in a gasifier to produce carbon monoxide and hydrogen (gasification), which are then synthesized into liquid hydrocarbons (fuel) in an FT reactor using a catalyst (Fischer-Tropsch Process).
