DENSO and Aisan Reach Agreement on Transfer of Fuel Pump Module Business

KARIYA, JAPAN, Jan 17, 2022 - (JCN Newswire) - Leading mobility supplier DENSO, and powertrain supplier Aisan today announced their respective Board of Directors have agreed upon and signed an agreement to transfer DENSO's fuel pump module* business to Aisan. In addition, the Board agreed to allow Aisan to acquire DENSO's equity stake in KYOSAN DENSO MANUFACTURING KENTUCKY, LLC (KDMK), located in Mt. Sterling, KY. The transfer is estimated to be on August 1, 2022.

The two companies previously announced that they reached a basic agreement on May 20, 2019, to begin studying the possibility of strengthening their competitiveness in powertrain and future growth areas. As a result of the study, the companies agreed that DENSO will transfer its entire business of developing, producing, and selling fuel pump modules to Aisan, and Aisan will acquire DENSO's equity stake in KDMK. Additionally, the companies determined that DENSO will not increase its ownership stake in Aisan.

Mutually Beneficial Agreement:

The mutually beneficial agreement will allow DENSO to focus on its Two Great Causes: Green and Peace of Mind, under which it will work to achieve carbon neutrality, zero traffic accidents and safe and seamless society. While, Aisan will work to improve its product capabilities by combining both Aisan and DENSO's technology and knowhow, as well as maximizing resources to improve production efficiency and achieve low-cost manufacturing.

The two companies will continue to collaborate and utilize each other's strengths and contribute to the realization of a sustainable mobility society.

This business transfer is subject to approval from the antitrust authorities in the relevant countries and regions.

Dakar Victory for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing as Al-attiyah/Baumel Take the Win

TOKYO, Jan 17, 2022 - (JCN Newswire) - TOYOTA GAZOO Racing's Nasser Al-Attiyah and co-driver Mathieu Baumel brought their GR DKR Hilux T1+ home safely on the final stage of the 2022 Dakar Rally to win the event overall by 27min 46sec. This is the Qatari driver's second victory for the team, having previously won the event in 2019. At the same time, Henk Lategan and Brett Cummings won the closing stage of the rally, beating the opposition by 49sec.


For Nasser and Mathieu, the final stage presented few real problems, despite challenging navigation. The pair had taken the lead in the rally during the opening stage of the event, and were never in danger of relinquishing that position. They brought their Hilux home in 1hr 35min 19sec, besting the competition despite having to stop mid-stage in order to change a punctured tyre.

For Giniel de Villiers and co-driver Dennis Murphy, the 2022 edition of the world's toughest cross-country race brought many highs and lows. However, it was a broken oil pipe that put paid to their podium aspirations mid-race. Despite this, the South Africans soldiered on, winning one stage outright, and deservedly attaining a place in the Top 5. Their time in the closing stage was 5min 30sec behind that posted by Henk and Brett, but it was enough to secure 5th place in the overall standings.

Dakar 2022 saw Shameer Variawa and co-driver Danie Stassen cement their in-car relationship, as they powered through some early-race jitters and bad luck, to record multiple solid stage results. By the time they completed the final stage, mid-way between the cities of Bisha and Jeddah, the pair had moved into 15th place overall. This was Shameer's second Dakar finish, and a maiden finish for his co-driver.

Dakar 2022 was the 44th edition of the iconic event, which first took place in January 1978. The event took place in northern Africa until 2007, with the 2008 event cancelled due to a terrorist threat. The rally moved to South America in 2009, where it enjoyed a decade of spectacular scenery and tough terrain. In 2020, the first Saudi Arabian edition of the event took place, with the 2022 edition covering 4,261km of competitive stages.

The car was really good, and the team did a great job preparing the car, and I'm really happy to be here at the end."

Henk Lategan: "We've really had the full Dakar experience. The highest highs, winning a stage early on, to the lowest of lows, sitting until after dark in the desert. We were a little down last night, after the troubles we had in Stage 11, but this morning we woke up and just decided to give it a go in the last stage. We had to overtake quite a lot of cars, and unfortunately, we got a puncture at one point. We thought that was the end of our chances for a second stage win, but we carried on pushing really hard to the end, and we pulled off one last stage win."

Airbus, NTT, DOCOMO and SKY Perfect JSAT Jointly Studying Connectivity Services from High-Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS)

Launched with a memorandum of understanding (MOU), the study will attempt to identify the early deployment requirements of a HAPS-based network. The collaboration will investigate the use of the Airbus Zephyr, the leading solar-powered, stratospheric unmanned aerial system (UAS), and the wireless communication networks of NTT, DOCOMO and SKY Perfect JSAT in order to test HAPS connectivity, identify practical applications, develop required technologies and ultimately launch space-based wireless broadband services.

In the global push to further advance 5G and eventually introduce 6G, initiatives are under way to expand coverage worldwide, including in the oceans and in the air. Such initiatives will include HAPS, which fly in the stratosphere about 20 km above the earth, and non-terrestrial network (NTN) technologies using geostationary-orbit (GEO) satellites and low Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites. HAPS networks are deemed to be a relatively easy solution for air and sea connectivity and an effective platform for deploying disaster countermeasures and many industrial applications. The provision of space-based radio access network services using NTN technologies, collectively called Space RAN (radio access network), is expected to support worldwide mobile communications with ultra-wide coverage and improved disaster resistance as well enhanced 5G and 6G. In addition, HAPS platforms can also interconnect to the nearest terrestrial network gateway and extend the reach of existing mobile services directly to end-user devices, providing service options including as rural, emergency and maritime connectivity.

With the signing of the MOU, the four companies will discuss and identify possible future developments necessary to unlock future HAPS-based connectivity services, lobby for standardization and institutionalization of HAPS operations, and explore business models for commercializing HAPS services.

Specific themes will include the applicability of HAPS for mobile connectivity on the ground and base station backhaul,1 the performance of various frequency bands in HAPS systems, the technological considerations for linking HAPS with satellites and ground base stations, and the establishment of a cooperative system to test a network combining NTN technology, satellites and HAPS.

As separately announced on November 15, 2021, DOCOMO and Airbus have successfully conducted a propagation test between the ground and a "Zephyr S" HAPS aircraft in the stratosphere, demonstrating the possibility of providing stable communication with such a configuration.

Base station backhaul refers to a fixed line that supports high-speed, high-capacity information transmission between a large number of wireless base stations in a mobile communications network and the core network.

Q1 Which 2021 achievements are you the most proud of?
