Spirit‘s incredible run at the PGL Major Antwerp 2022 will continue into the semi-finals following another unexpected victory, this time against FURIA. The Russians were seemingly immune to the pressure of playing in front of the Antwerps Sportpaleis, taking down the Brazilians on Vertigo 16-12 before completing the upset on Ancient 16-8.
The Leonid “chopper” Vishnyakov-led squad will continue its journey at the Major, but it will not get any easier. Spirit‘ semi-final match will see them face off against tournament favorites FaZe on Saturday, following the international’s squad victory over NIP in the first quarter-final.
Meanwhile, FURIA‘s time in Belgium has come to an end. The Brazilians’ tournament included several quality moments, most notably their wins against BIG and G2 on their way to securing their second consecutive playoff finish at a Major.
Spirit have advanced to the semi-finals
Spirit came into FURIA‘s pick of Vertigo with fire under their bellies, executing a fast-paced offensive that caught the Brazilians off guard as Abdul “degster” Gasanov thrived in front of the crowd. However, the Russians could not get away with beasting Andrei “arT” Piovezan‘s team at their own game for long and quickly ran out of steam after going 7-3 ahead. Rafael “saffee” Costa and André “drop” Abreu began to find impact on the CT side, powering FURIA to a five-round winning streak to edge the half 8-7.
Despite taking the second pistol, the Brazilian squad was unable to significantly extend their advantage, conceding the following round to a Spirit force buy. From there, chopper and company would only drop three more rounds as Pavel “s1ren” Ogloblin played a career-defining CT side to power his team to a 16-12 victory.
degster opened up the pistol on Ancient with three frags, giving his team the early advantage on the T side. After saving in the second round, FURIA brought out the rifles on the defense and for a time, their CT side looked solid, allowing the Brazilians to gain a 6-4 advantage. Unfortunately for them, Boris “magixx” Vorobiev would not let the Brazilians run away with the half and propelled Spirit to an 8-7 advantage going into halftime. FURIA‘s fortunes did not change after the break, and arT‘s squad was unable to organize an offense worthy of a comeback, claiming only one round on their way to a 8-16 defeat.
