  • Sony Interactive Entertainment files a new patent application for NFTs to be transferable between different games and consoles, enabling an interoperable Web3 gameplay experience for players.
  • The proposed framework allows cross-generational NFT compatibility, from older consoles like the PS4 to newer ones like the PS5, and aims to include products outside Sony’s ecosystem, such as Xbox and cloud-based games.
  • With Asia being the largest gaming market, traditional gaming studios like Sony entering the blockchain space are expected to drive adoption, while RPGs, MMORPGs, and casual games are the most suitable genres for blockchain integration.

Sony Interactive Entertainment, the global giant in gaming and entertainment, has submitted a new patent application for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to be transferable across various games and consoles, a concept that has the potential to reshape the gaming landscape.

Interoperable Web3 Gameplay Experience for Sony Users

According to the patent, players using Sony products like the PlayStation will enjoy an interoperable Web3 gameplay experience. This will enable them to transfer in-game assets between devices such as virtual reality (VR) headsets, tablets, computers, and smartphones.

Cross-Generational NFT Compatibility

The patent also emphasizes that NFTs can be used across different console generations, such as from the PS4 to the PS5.

Furthermore, Sony intends to make the framework interoperable with products outside its ecosystem, like the Xbox and cloud-based video games. The patent outlines a function to prevent gamers from duplicating tasks to earn the same NFTs across different products or games.

Sony’s Foray into the Web3 Space

Sony first hinted at exploring the web3 space in August 2022, when it surveyed users about their interest in NFTs. During the fighting game tournament Evo, the company inquired about the types of NFTs or digital collectibles that users would be most interested in purchasing.

In September 2022, Sony Music Entertainment filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for “audio and video recordings featuring live musical performances authenticated by NFTs.”

Traditional Gaming Studios Driving Blockchain Adoption

A report by the Blockchain Game Alliance (BGA) highlights that the entry of traditional gaming studios into the blockchain space is a crucial factor in driving adoption. The survey also revealed that digital asset ownership is still the primary benefit of blockchain games, although it is not yet being utilized effectively.

Asia: The Largest Gaming Market with Untapped Potential

In another study, Coinmarket stated that Asia has the majority of gamers around the globe, noting that “it is not only the largest market in the world but brimming with growth potential,” disclosing that role-playing games (RPG), especially MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game), and casual games, are the most suitable game genres in the blockchain space.
