Renewable energy production has exceeded that of fossil fuels for a significant period of time in the UK. EcoWatch, established in 2005 in Ohio, is an online platform that focuses on providing scientifically accurate content on environmental topics, including issues, reasons, and remedies.

In the beginning of 2024, the UK produced more electricity from wind power than from fossil fuels. Additionally, electricity generation from fossil fuels hit a new low on April 15th.

In the first quarter of 2024, wind energy sources produced 25.3 terawatt hours of electricity, accounting for 39.4% of total electricity generation. Meanwhile, fossil fuel sources generated 23.6 TWh, making up 36.2% of total electricity generation during the same period. This data comes from Ember, a non-profit organization focused on energy analysis.

The amount of electricity generated from wind energy was highest in January at 9.07 TWh, followed by 8.24 TWh in February and 7.96 TWh in March. Coal generated 0.48 TWh in January, 0.22 TWh in February, and 0.34 TWh in March. Gas contributed 9.65 TWh, 6.27 TWh, and 5.90 TWh in January, February, and March respectively. Other fossil fuel sources generated 0.25 TWh in January, 0.24 TWh in February, and 0.23 TWh in March.

According to Reuters, the UK generated a total of 27.1 TWh of electricity in the first quarter of 2024 from wind and solar energy, marking a record high of 42.2% of electricity generation coming from renewable sources.

In the second quarter, it seems that progress is ongoing as the UK saw a record low in electricity generation from fossil fuels on April 15, as reported by Carbon Brief. During one hour on April 15, electricity generated from fossil fuels reached an all-time low of 2.4%.

According to Carbon Brief, the National Grid Electricity System Operator (NGESO) in the UK aims to operate the electrical grid without relying on fossil fuels for short periods by 2025. This goal is being achieved through various milestones.

Craig Dyke, who is the director of system operations at NGESO, explained to Carbon Brief that the progress in their operations did not happen suddenly. It was the result of years of hard work and collaboration with industry, energy regulator Ofgem, and the government. This collaboration involved not just implementing new technologies, but also changing attitudes, improving processes, and working together as a team.

The United Kingdom aims to achieve net-zero emissions by the year 2050 by shifting towards the use of renewable energy sources.

Ember reported that in 2010, approximately 33% of the energy generated in the UK was from coal, but by 2022, this decreased significantly to just 2%. Carbon Brief stated that as of 2023, around 33% of electricity generation in England, Scotland, and Wales came from fossil fuels, with renewables accounting for about 40% of electricity generation.
