Kempower recently extended an invitation for me to attend the inauguration of their new manufacturing plant in North Carolina. Typically, a journalist's instinct is to rush out, gather the facts quickly, and publish the story as soon as possible. However, as I toured the facility and participated in the event, I realized that this story required a different approach. I collected extensive details about the Kempower system, and as my brain processed all this information, it became clear that this narrative needed more context to truly benefit the readers.
In this piece, I’ll explore more thoroughly what Kempower is undertaking in North Carolina and, crucially, discuss why this is significant for the future of electric vehicle charging.
More Than Just a Charging Station Producer
There might be a niche industry magazine that details the various types of gas pumps, but I’ve never come across it and likely never will. Throughout my time, I've encountered numerous gas pumps, focusing solely on one aspect: ensuring that fuel was delivered into the tank.
Charging an electric vehicle should be straightforward and uneventful. While early adopters and enthusiasts might enjoy exploring the technical aspects like voltages, connectors, and communication protocols, the general public prefers simplicity. When our family members use an EV, we hope for a hassle-free experience. Ideally, they should be able to plug in and charge without any complications. Moreover, we want them to share their positive experiences with others, encouraging more friends and family to feel at ease with driving electric vehicles.
This is where Kempower’s system truly excels.
For a typical mainstream electric vehicle (EV) buyer who isn't an early adopter, you're aware that there's a compact charging station ahead with the appropriate connectors for your EV. These charging stations, referred to as "satellites," are modular and can feature one or two connectors of the type chosen by the charging provider. Options include a NACS and a CCS connector, two NACS connectors, two CCS connectors, or any other type of international plug required. The focus is on the user, and charging providers have the flexibility to prioritize their needs accordingly.
However, possessing the correct plug or plugs is irrelevant if the charging station operates at a slow pace or, even worse, fails to charge entirely. The crucial factor lies in what occurs at the cabinet situated a few yards away.
Rather than assigning power modules to specific stalls or small groups of stalls, the entire system's power is pooled and distributed to satellite units in 25 kW increments. Each satellite unit can draw the necessary amount of power from any available module. As a vehicle's battery becomes charged and its power requirement decreases, the freed-up modules are returned to the pool for use by other vehicles. This approach increases the likelihood that any vehicle present will receive the quickest possible charge at any given voltage.
Regardless of how expertly something is constructed, there is always a chance it could fail. This is essentially Murphy's law, which states that anything that can go wrong will eventually do so. Rather than relying on the unrealistic expectation that every power module will always function flawlessly, Kempower advises charging providers to equip themselves with a sufficient number of modules. This way, even if one or two modules fail, the system can still provide most users with a quick charging experience. By distributing the power among the operational modules, the system can maintain good performance despite some issues.
Clearly, a charging service must regularly replace old modules with new ones and maintain the station to ensure it remains in excellent condition. This proactive approach allows them to address issues before they impact users. Kempower's advanced software and hardware setup can detect such faults, enabling technicians to respond swiftly.
One benefit of this flexible, shared power system is the ability to concentrate all the power on a single vehicle when necessary. For larger locations equipped with multiple power modules and satellite charging stations, the site owner can add an extra satellite capable of supplying up to 1.2 MW to a delivery truck or more. This shared power model is particularly advantageous for locations such as gas stations, grocery stores, and potentially even truck stops or travel centers that cater to both heavy trucks and light vehicles.
Certainly, all the benefits of modularity, flexibility, and resilience become irrelevant if faulty components leave the factory and are installed in charging stations (you can ask Electrify America about their experience with this issue). This is where Kempower truly excels.
Kempower handles all of their final assembly and testing internally, adhering to rigorous safety and reliability standards. They even conduct high-voltage tests on the enclosures that hold the power modules to ensure correct wiring and proper functioning of all components, including those sourced from other suppliers.
How Can We Be Certain This Isn't Just an Illusion?
Organizing an impressive press conference can be straightforward. With an elaborate presentation and well-chosen visual aids, persuading an audience becomes quite simple. However, Kempower is not new to this arena. For those familiar with the situation, charging dependability outside of Tesla stations in Europe has significantly outpaced that in the United States in recent years. Kempower has been active globally for years, providing power solutions for a variety of vehicles, including cars, trucks, and even heavy machinery.
Throughout its development and production journey, the Kempower system has consistently demonstrated outstanding reliability in practical applications. This achievement is not merely for display; it represents a genuine track record.
A Segment of a Larger Narrative of Dependable Charging Firms Breaking into the U.S. Market
In addition to Kempower, other trustworthy charging station producers such as Alpitronic are making their way into the American market, with some even establishing operations in North Carolina. This indicates that the era of competing with subpar equipment is nearing its end.
This doesn't imply that every other business will shut down, but it does suggest that those who don't maintain a high level of dependability won't survive for long. With companies like Kempower entering the U.S. market, the overall industry is set to enhance over the next few years. The real question is which companies will endure and remain operational in the future.
