Reported Atomic Wallet Hack: $35M Crypto Vanished

Date:

Atomic Wallet, a popular cryptocurrency wallet, has reportedly been hit by a major security breach, resulting in over $35 million in digital assets being stolen. This alarming news was reported by BleepingComputer on June 4, 2023.

Atomic Wallet, a versatile crypto wallet compatible with various operating systems, including Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, and Linux, is currently under investigation following reports of large-scale theft from users’ wallets. The company acknowledged the issue on June 3rd via Twitter, stating that they had received reports of compromised wallets and were actively investigating the situation.

In an effort to contain the situation and prevent further damage, Atomic Wallet has engaged third-party security companies to investigate the incident and block the stolen funds from being traded on exchanges. The company has also temporarily taken down its download server, ‘get.atomicwallet.io’, possibly to prevent further compromises if their software was breached.

Blockchain investigator ZachXBT has been tracking the transactions of the stolen funds and estimates that over $35 million in various cryptocurrencies has been siphoned off due to this breach.

The earliest transaction for stolen Atomic Wallet assets was reportedly on Friday, June 2nd, at 21:45 UTC, according to crypto security researcher Tay.

As the investigation continues, Atomic Wallet is gathering information from victims, including details about their operating system, the source of the downloaded software, actions taken prior to the theft, and the storage location of their backup phrase. Some users have reported that their crypto was stolen after a recent software update, while others claim that their assets were stolen despite not having updated their software.

At this point, the exact cause of the compromise remains unclear. Atomic Wallet users are advised to transfer their crypto assets to other wallets while the investigation is ongoing.
