Lockheed grants Poland's industry a position in its rocket launcher program

WARSAW, Poland — Lockheed Martin is providing Poland's defense sector with a chance to engage in manufacturing guided multiple-launch rocket systems, similar to those utilized by Ukraine to counter Russian forces.
The proposal from the U.S. defense company arrives at a time when Poland is thinking about purchasing as many as 486 launchers along with launcher-loader module kits and associated equipment for its M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, manufactured by Lockheed.
A representative from Lockheed Martin informed Defense News at a briefing in Warsaw that the missiles might be manufactured at Mesko, which is a branch of Poland's government-owned defense conglomerate PGZ. The American corporation is in discussions with Polish authorities at the moment.
A spokesperson, speaking anonymously due to the sensitive nature of the discussions, revealed that the Homar-A initiative aims to manufacture GMLRS (guided multiple-launch rocket system) ammunition in Poland. The plan includes gradually introducing two versions of the GMLRS to fulfill the requirements of the Polish military. The initial stage of production, expected to utilize kits supplied by the United States, could commence as early as 2026.
In September 2023, Mariusz Błaszczak, who was the Defence Minister at the time, finalized a preliminary agreement to purchase as many as 486 HIMARS systems. This framework deal was signed more than seven months after the U.S. State Department gave the green light to Poland's request to buy advanced rockets and launchers, valued at approximately $10 billion.
Nonetheless, a moderate administration was established in Poland three months afterward, and an executive agreement has yet to be finalized.
In February 2019, Poland signed a deal to purchase 20 HIMARS launchers for roughly $414 million.
In both the standard and modified versions of the GMLRS, the missile is equipped with a 200-pound warhead and can reach distances over 70 kilometers (44 miles), as indicated by information from the American producer.
