With how the Red Sox’s season is going currently, there is definitely spots that have room for improvement. Specifically, the Sox need help with their whole pitching staff, and the right side of the infield, first and second base. The best spot to look for long term improvement is at the upcoming free agent class. This article will dive into some notable free agent moves that the Sox can make over the 2023-24 offseason.
1. Josh Bell (Cleveland Guardian 1B)
Josh Bell is one of the more notable names for upcoming free agents at first base. The switch-hitting first basemen is a power bat, with a career .260 average and over 135 home runs. The Red Sox have struggled with getting a star first basemen since Kevin Youkilis, and Bell could be the next.
Bell could also be the stopgap to help current first basemen Triston Casas develop.
2. Tim Anderson (Chicago White Sox SS)
While Tim Anderson is having an ok year this year, his career has proven to be better than what he is showing. With the possible blow up of the White Sox near the trade deadline, Anderson will probably be on the market for a better team. While he is a shortstop and the Sox already have Trevor Story, they could keep Story at second and put Anderson at short.
3. Max Scherzer (New York Mets RHP)
However, Mad Max is getting up there in age, and the Mets may consider moving on from him to buy a younger star pitcher. The Sox could give the veteran a good deal to ride out his days in the MLB.
4. Shohei Ohtani (LA Angels RHP/DH)
The former MVP has a teammate from his WBC Team Japan team on the Sox, Masataka Yoshida. If Yoshida can convince Ohtani to join Boston, it would make them a contender instantly.
5. Aroldis Chapman (KC Royals LHP)
Aroldis Chapman is another legendary pitcher of the last decade. Last year he was in a slump, but this year he has shown he still can throw heat.
If the Royals do not dump him at the trade deadline, the Sox could make a push for him to be the left handed closer to pair with Kenley Jansen. That way, they can deal with any sluggers late in a tight game.
These are just some of the notable free agent moves that the Red Sox could make, and some of them will certainly help them. Overall, the Sox will have to be a huge buyer in free agency if they want to get out of this season and a half slump of mediocrity.
