Bitcoin kernontwikkelaar Luke Dashjr has criticized the Runes protocol, suggesting it exploits a fundamental design flaw within the blockchain network.
In een 26 april post on X (formerly Twitter), Dashjr delineated the disparity between Ordinal Inscriptions and the Runes protocol in how they interact with the network. He clarified that while Ordinalen capitalize on vulnerabilities within the blockchain, the Runes protocol operates within the framework of the network’s design flaws.

“Ordinals zijn een aanval met 9 vectoren die misbruik maken van kwetsbaarheden in Bitcoin Core, Runes zijn “slechts” een aanval met 5 vectoren die feitelijk technisch gezien de “regels” volgen.
Ordinals are a novel form of digital assets, akin to NFTs, etched onto satoshis, which are the smallest units of Bitcoin. Their emergence last year marked Bitcoin’s foray into NFTs, sparking notable interest within the crypto community.
On the other hand, Runes are fungible tokens introduced on the day Bitcoin completed its fourth halving. Post-launch, these tokens significantly congested the network, leading to a surge in transactiekosten.
Notably, Dashjr has long been critical of both asset types, asserting that they deviate from BTC’s core principles and contribute to blockchain spam. Last year, he geëtiketteerd Ordinals as a bug and spearheaded initiatives to address them through bug fixes.
Runen-transactie filteren
In het licht van zijn tegenstand stelde Dashjr methoden voor om Runes-transacties te filteren.
He zei:
“Om Runes-spam te filteren met Bitcoin Knots of Bitcoin Core, is de enige aanpak op dit moment het instellen van datacarriersize=0 in uw bitcoin.conf-bestand (of de gelijkwaardige GUI-optie alleen in Knots).”
Uit de eerste aanwijzingen blijkt echter dat mijnwerkers zijn advies niet opvolgen. Ocean Mining, een gedecentraliseerde mijnbouwpool waar Dashjr onlangs als CTO fungeert gedolven het eerste blok na de halvering, waarbij meer dan 75% van de transacties afkomstig zijn van het Runes-protocol.
In their defense, several miners cited the lucrative revenue stream from Runes transactions as their reason for processing them.
