Nintendo’s released a new Switch app today, which by our calculations means the ecosystem now has a grand total of, what, three? Bit overkill, guys.
This new app is actually closer to PlayStation’s, as it allows you to browse the eShop and purchase new games. Honestly, it would have been a godsend on the original Switch as browsing that store became a serious chore after a while.
Anyway, one other feature has caught our attention: the ability to look back at your playtime in granular detail.
Now, many of you will know the Switch and its successor has always told you approximately how many hours you’ve spent playing a game, but with this new app you can see how many days you’ve loaded a title and each play session in granular detail.
It’s not accurate to the exact second, but it gives you a pretty compelling recap of your entire history with a particular title. It’s all data that Nintendo’s been storing on a server and failing to surface for years, even dating back to the 3DS.
And it’s also information we know Sony has access to, as it surfaces a ton of interesting stats with its Spotify-style wrap ups.
But now Nintendo has started to make this data more accessible, we’re beginning to wonder why Sony doesn’t do the same.
Wouldn’t it be cool to know how many times you’ve loaded a title? And what your longest ever play session was?
Look, we know none of this is necessary, and it likely only appeals to nerds – but if the information’s out there, why not let us see it? Nintendo’s doing that now, so hopefully Sony can share PS5’s play data in a similar fashion.
