MSI 2022 Day 8: Evil Geniuses get close, but G2’s streak continues!

Date:

Evil Geniuses were able to get close to beating the undefeated G2 with a solid early to mid game, but G2’s sublime teamfighting pulls them out of the hole once again!

Awww man this game was so close… Evil Geniuses were so close to taking the first win against G2 and snapping their win streak in half, but the best team on the planet managed to fight their way out of another deficit. Y’know, we were memeing on Evil Geniuses going 0-4 against G2 in the Groups Stage, but given how unstoppable this G2 team looks, maybe we were being too hard on EG! Inspired was simply phenomenal this game, finding clutch Herald steals and dazzling outplays against Caps’ LeBlanc, but EG were unable to capitalize off the early gold lead they established from winning successive skirmishes.

The biggest reason for EG’s throw was Vulcan, who looked like C9 Vulcan with the way he was getting caught on in the river on Leona, allowing for G2 to stem the bleeding from their early game deficit and give them time to scale into Ornn items with their superior teamfighting comp. Up until Vulcan’s deaths, EG were in a commanding position and were even winning tight skirmishes against the undefeated titans…

In my Day 1 Rumble post, I noted how G2’s teamfighting prowess seems to be the hidden factor in them outperforming every time thus far. All other major regions teams have run the Season 11 meta of roaming mid laners such as Twisted Fate and Ryze – going for the tried and true strategy of snowballing through mid/jg and taking over the mid game. G2, on the other hand, have prioritized teamfighting compositions that take advantage of the new objective bounties and scale into the late game. They get behind and utilize the new bounty system to slingshot ahead with one pristinely played teamfight, gobbling up all the gold in one fell swoop and ending the game shortly thereafter. Credit has to go to coach Dylan Falco for his Ornn priority from the start of the LEC playoffs, but also to the players (especially Flakked) for their exceptional teamfighting to bring the game back in their control.
