MLB Power Rankings: August 15

Date:

Every week MLB teams will be ranked for the rest of the season. Here are the 2022 MLB power rankings: August 15.

1. Los Angeles Dodgers

Record: 79-34

Previous Ranking: 1

The Dodgers have established themselves as the very clear number 1 team in the league. They hold the best run differential in the league by almost 50 runs and have been on a ridiculously hot streak, winning over 10 games in a row recently.

2. Houston Astros

Record: 75-41

Previous Ranking: 3

The Astros have been steady and consistent for the entire year. They pounced on the opportunity to become the top team in the AL as the Yankees have struggled. They have played well against top teams and are a well-oiled machine of a team.

3. New York Mets

Record: 75-40

Previous Ranking: 4

The combination of Jacob DeGrom and Max Scherzer has proved to be as incredible as everybody has expected. DeGrom has taken back his title as one of the best pitchers on the planet, with 3 tremendous performances to start the season (16.66 IP, 6 hits, 3 ER).

4. New York Yankees

Record: 72-43

Previous Ranking: 1

The Yankees are fighting injuries to multiple of their stars, as well as getting cold as a unit at the worst time. They remain in the top 5 of the MLB, pretty obviously, but have dropped from their top spot.

5. Atlanta Braves

Record: 70-46

Previous Ranking: 5

The Braves have a commanding lead on the first NL Wild Card spot. They are battling in one of the most competitive divisions, if not the most competitive division in baseball. They sit over 5 games back, but that lead isn’t insurmountable for the reigning World Series champs.

6. Philadelphia Phillies

Record: 63-51

Previous Ranking: 10

The Phillies may be one of the top few hottest teams in the entire league. They find themselves just out of the top 5 yet are 3rd in their own division. The NL East is the most top-heavy division in baseball, and because of that, the Phillies will need a Wild Card spot to play in October.

7. St. Louis Cardinals

Record: 63-51

Previous Ranking: 8

The Cardinals have taken the NL Central lead from the Brewers. They have been riding a hot streak as of late. This hot streak, along with the Brewers getting cold has catapulted the Cardinals out in front.

8. San Diego Padres

Record: 65-52

Previous Ranking: 5

Padres’ slugger Fernando Tatis Jr. was busted for a PED (clostebol) resulting in an 80-game suspension. Tatis will miss the rest of the 2022 season. This is a huge shot to the morale in San Diego, as the young superstar was close to making his 2022 debut.

9. Seattle Mariners

Record: 62-54

Previous Ranking: 11

The acquisition of Luis Castillo has proved to be quite a valuable one for the Seattle Mariners. They unloaded a few of their top prospects for Castillo, but Castillo has won both of his first 2 starts with the team.

10. Toronto Blue Jays

Record: 61-52

Previous Ranking: 7

The Blue Jays hold the top AL Wild Card spot, but it is far from cemented. They are one of the more talented and exciting teams in the league and they look to rebound from a struggling last 10 games (3-7).

11. Milwaukee Brewers

Record: 61-52

Previous Ranking: 9

The Brewers play in one of the least competitive divisions in the MLB. The NL Central only has 2 competitive teams and the Brewers have struggled enough to lose their lead in the division. Devin Williams will need to continue to adjust to his new role of being the closer.

12. Cleveland Guardians

Record: 61-53

Previous Ranking: 17

The Guardians are HOT. They have taken over the top spot in the AL Central and also have the top run differential in the division. They also lead the MLB with the most top 100 prospects out of any team.

13. Tampa Bay Rays

Record: 60-53

Previous Ranking: 13

The Rays’ ace, Shane McClanahan has struggled since the All-Star Break. In 4 starts, he has allowed multiple runs in each start and has raised his season ERA by over half a run (1.71 to 2.28).

14. Baltimore Orioles

Record: 59-55

Previous Ranking: 14

The Orioles continue to fight for a playoff spot. They rank 4th in the AL East but are just 1.5 games out of a wild card spot. The Orioles could definitely shake things up in the American League this year.

15. Minnesota Twins

Record: 58-55

Previous Ranking: 12

The Twins have struggled mightily as of late, losing the AL Central lead in the last few weeks. They currently sit in second place, tied with the White Sox at 2.5 games back of the Guardians.

16. Chicago White Sox

Record: 59-56

Previous Ranking: 15

The White Sox have underperformed for most of the season, but they are turning into true contenders at the right time. Nobody wants to see this incredibly talented team in October. They are dangerous.

17. San Francisco Giants

Record: 57-57

Previous Ranking: 18

The Giants have wavered at about .500 for the last few weeks. They are currently 6 games back of an NL Wild Card spot and 22.5 games out of the division. They will need to right the ship soon if they want to make some October magic.

18. Boston Red Sox

Record: 57-59

Previous Ranking: 16

The Red Sox still have a realistic path to the playoffs. It starts with their recent series win over their Rival New York Yankees, where they won 2 close games and let the 3rd slip out of their grasp.

19. Arizona Diamondbacks

Record: 53-61

Previous Ranking: 20

The Diamondbacks have an outside chance to finish the season at .500. They have played beyond expectations for a majority of the year and currently sit 8 games under .500. A .500 level season would be a huge confidence boost for Arizona’s young core.

20. Colorado Rockies

Record: 51-66

Previous Ranking: 23

The story of Wynton Bernard can’t fully be described in a few sentences. It wouldn’t do him justice. To sum it up, Bernard has spent a decade in the minor leagues and recently got the call to the Rockies, where he recorded a hit and a stolen base in his debut.

21. Miami Marlins

Record: 50-65

Previous Ranking: 19

The Marlins offense has been pretty nonexistent in the month of August. They are currently averaging less than 2 runs a game, 1.85, which ranks dead last in the MLB over that span.

22. Texas Rangers

Record: 51-63

Previous Ranking: 21

The Rangers took a series against their division rival, the Seattle Mariners, by winning 2 out of the 3 games. While the Rangers are on the outside of the playoffs, looking in, they can still try to play spoiler to multiple playoff hopeful teams.

23. Los Angeles Angels

Record: 51-64

Previous Ranking: 22

The 2022 Los Angeles Angels season is ending quite like the last few seasons for them. A disappointing season, while their star player competes for an MVP. Ohtani has an outside chance of beating out Aaron Judge for the AL MVP.

24. Chicago Cubs

Record: 47-66

Previous Ranking: 26

The NL Central is a 3 way race for 3rd place. The Cubs, Reds, and Pirates could finish the year anywhere from 3rd in the Central to 5th in the Central. As of now, the Cubs are the top of these 3 teams, defeating the Reds in the 2022 Field of Dreams game.

25. Kansas City Royals

Record: 48-68

Previous Ranking: 27

Brady Singer has been incredible for the Royals in his last 5 starts. He has faced the White Sox two times, the Dodgers, the Yankees, and the Rays. In those 5 starts, he has a 1.67 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 32.33 innings.

26. Cincinnati Reds

Record: 45-68

Previous Ranking: 25

The Reds have one of the better young farm systems in the league, but that has left them with a pretty poor Major League roster. Top prospect Elly De La Cruz has absolutely tore up the minor leagues, showing superstar potential.

27. Pittsburgh Pirates

Record: 45-70

Previous Ranking: 24

Just a month ago, the Pirates were ranked 3rd in the NL Central. They weren’t fighting for a playoff spot, but they were showing small signs of hope. They now sit in 5th in the NL Central and currently ride a 4-game losing streak.

28. Detroit Tigers

Record: 43-73

Previous Ranking: 28

The Tigers have begun a terrible slide over the last two weeks, with a 1-9 record in their last 10 games and 7 straight losses. If this is the final season for Miguel Cabrera, which I believe it is, Tigers fans should enjoy the future Hall of Famer while they can.

29. Oakland Athletics

Record: 41-74

Previous Ranking: 29

The Athletics have lost an astounding 8 games in a row. They could very well be penciled in at the 29 spot for the rest of the season, as they are clearly a bit ahead of the Nationals, but worse than the rest of the league.

30. Washington Nationals

Record: 38-78

Previous Ranking: 30

The Nationals are a perennial 30th ranked team in these rankings. They could very well sit in that spot for the remainder of the season, as there is not much to be excited for on the Major League roster.
