Microsoft Edge’s browser VPN received a substantial upgrade to its data cap, letting users take advantage of their browser’s built-in privacy features more often.
A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, is a technology that enhances online privacy and security. It works by creating an encrypted connection between a user’s device and the internet, safeguarding data from potential cyber-attacks.
Microsoft’s browser VPN, also known as the Edge Secure Network, has been in development for a year, with Microsoft gradually upgrading it as they test out and create new features.
Notably, Edge’s Secure Network now provides users with 5GB of free data per month, a sizable upgrade from the original 1GB of monthly data. It won’t be enough for users to regularly perform data-heavy tasks, but it’s enough to regularly browse with the protection of a VPN.
However, unlike premium VPN services like Private Internet Access or NordVPN, Edge’s Secure Network doesn’t offer functions such as choosing your preferred location or enabling regional streaming content. That said, it does afford access to Torrent sites blocked by local Internet Service Providers (ISPs).
The feature operates by routing internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel, thus securing all connections, including insecure HTTP ones. This action significantly reduces the potential for cyber attackers to access user browsing data.
The biggest drawback is that users are required to sign into Microsoft in order to use the VPN. Some may worry this defeats the purpose of a VPN, but Microsoft assures customers that user identity information is not disclosed to the service provider.
According to Microsoft, this step is necessary to monitor the monthly data usage and determine when the free 5GB data limit is exhausted. Most premium VPNs have no logs policies, meaning even the company doesn’t keep logs of your activity.
Even with the drawback, ultimately, the Edge VPN upgrade marks a step forward in enhancing user privacy and security online, addressing the ongoing demand for better cybersecurity.
