Penix has had a long college career and has improved his stock while playing at two schools. Now he is in the 2024 NFL Draft.
In the 2018 recruiting class, Penix was a three-star recruit who chose to sign with Indiana. He spent four seasons there where he played solidly, but suffered some injuries. Penix passed for 4,197 yards, 29 touchdowns and 15 interceptions on 59.4 percent completion. Following his time at Indiana, Penix transferred to Washington before the 2022 season. He started off hot, passing for 4,641 yards, 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions on 65.3 percent completion. His play led the Huskies to an 11-win season. He returned for the 2023 season and was a Heisman Finalist. Penix passed for 4,903 yards, 36 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on 65.4 percent completion. He helped Washington go all the way to the National Championship Game.
Following the National Championship, Penix has exhausted his college eligibility. He is currently projected to be a first or second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Michael Penix Strengths
Penix has great arm talent. He can get velocity on the ball to fit it into tight windows. Penix is also able to push the ball downfield with ease. Even if his feet aren’t perfectly set, he can throw the ball with speed. This will be valuable in the NFL, as he won’t leave too many passes hanging in the air for defenders to close in on.
His strong arm helps him show off his great deep ball accuracy. Penix can thrive in a vertical offense as he has the arm power and deep ball placement to hit receivers in stride. He lets the ball rip with ease and can generate big plays if his receivers get a step on the defensive back.
He has shown good pre-snap recognition and the ability to go see the field clearly. Penix can adjust plays at the line of scrimmage to get his team into good looks. He has quick field vision, which allows him to hit the open target on a lot of throws.
Michael Penix Weaknesses
Penix struggled with pressure throughout his career. Pressure impacted his accuracy a lot as a several incompletions came in the face of pressure. When he is moved off his spot, he has trouble resetting and throwing accurate footballs. While he can make plays against pressure, that is not something he has been consistent at the last few years.
He struggles with his intermediate accuracy. While he can hit the deep ball and short throws where he can get the ball out quickly, he struggles with his touch. That makes it tough for him to hit receivers in the intermediate part of the field. At times he completes passes, but could have better ball placement so that the receiver could run after the catch.
There are a few things NFL teams will have to look into when evaluating Penix’s time in college. He is an older prospect, so he’ll have less time to develop at the NFL level. Penix also had four season-ending injuries. They involved his shoulder and torn ACLs. There may be some teams uncomfortable drafting him because of his significant injury history.
