Mexico’s Promising Stars Since Their Failure in Qatar

Date:

Gerardo ‘El Tata’ Martino’s Mexico crashed out of Qatar 2022 in their most embarrassing performance in recent World Cup appearances. Their last three performances saw them pull through to the knockout stages, toppling giants like France, Germany and Brazil in the process. However, after their fiasco in Qatar, a handful of Mexican stars have returned to their team mid-season and shown they can rise above the criticisms.

Despite losing out on a spot on the roster for Qatar, Mexican-Argentine star Santiago Gimenez has torn up the Eredevisie, scoring 12 goals for Dutch giants Feyenoord. Santiago’s adaptability to a tougher league has allowed him to compete for a starting spot with Brazilian teammate Danilo. With a possible Eredivisie trophy on the way, Santiago spearheads the list of in-form players for El Tri. The Mexican number nine has lined himself up to become El Tri’s generational star as Mexico look for a looming generational change.

Just 50 miles north of Rotterdam, Edson Alvarez has established himself as a vital piece to Ajax’s success. ‘El Machìn’ has proven himself versatile enough to play as both a six and a center-back for the Dutch giants. His performances have gained attention from Chelsea and Newcastle United this season. Edson’s protagonist role for El Tri is lining him up to be the leader of El Tri as they point towards the 2026 World Cup.

Unsurprisingly, only three Mexican players made the jump from North America to Europe after the World Cup. The most important being Cesar Montes to Barcelona’s RCD Espanyol. The Mexican defender made an instant impact, becoming a starter for Espanyol and reinforcing the Spanish side’s defensive line. Reportedly garnering interest from the Premier League, Montes’ transfer value has increased significantly.

Who is up next for Mexico?

Los Angeles Galaxy right-back Julian Araujo has recently made a huge transfer from Major League Soccer to Spanish giants FC Barcelona. Despite a lengthy saga with FIFA over a second-late transfer, Araujo has incorporated into Barça Athletic’s ranks, hoping to join Xavi in the first team early into preseason in the summer. However, with players like Jorge Sanchez and Kevin Alvarez in form, the right-back spot for Mexico is spiraling into a tight race.

Additionally, in Spain’s second division, Mexican winger Jordan Carrillo has won the hearts of the Sporting Gijón faithful. His performances with the Asturias club has earned him a contract extension and a chance to solidify himself in Europe’s ranks.

Nations League Call-Ups

With Diego Cocca recently appointed as Mexico’s manager, his Nations League fixtures will be an opportunity to introduce fresh faces to the player pools and reinvigorate El Tricolor back to being the competitive giant in CONCACAF. If FMF has learned anything from it’s fiasco in Qatar, they can return to competing with the likes of the USMNT and an incredibly in form Canada.
