Kansas City Chiefs Roster: Strengths

Date:

With an offseason full of change, TGH takes a look at the strengths of the 2022 Kansas City Chiefs roster.

Strengths

Quarterback:

There is no question that Kansas City is set at the quarterback position for the foreseeable future. In 2020 the Chiefs extended Patrick Mahomes to a 10-year $503 million dollar deal which is the largest contract in NFL history. Mahomes is currently the face of the league and the leader in a new “golden era” of quarterbacks.

The young star has proven to be at the top of his position. Mahomes has already acquired an MVP award and has gone to four consecutive pro bowls. He has also out-dueled other young elite quarterbacks in the playoffs, defeating Bills quarterback Josh Allen twice in the playoffs already. With Mahomes in Kansas City never count the Chiefs out of a playoff run.

Pass Catchers

The Chiefs have had the luxury of the most dynamic pass-catching duo for the last couple of years. That all changed when Kansas City traded wide-out Tyreek Hill to Miami. Even though this unit lost half its star power, Kansas City rebounded by making the most of the 2022 offseason.

Kansas City acquired JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling in free agency while drafting Skyy Moore in the NFL Draft. These new acquisitions will add loads of depth to the already existing players on the roster. Tight End Travis Kelce is slotted to have another All-Pro year and wide-out Mecole Hardman is reaching the most critical part of his career with Hill gone. Mahomes will enjoy the new influx of talent while navigating this team through a difficult schedule.

Offensive Line

Ever since the offensive line was overhauled in 2020, this unit has been a huge strength for this team. One reason for Patrick Mahomes’ success is due to the stellar play of the offensive line (when healthy). One example of this unit’s impact on the team is the Super Bowl loss versus Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While Kansas City was dominant all season one player being injured on the offensive line derailed a possible championship. Eric Fisher who was then the leader of this unit was hurt for the big game and Kansas City’s offensive line was embarrassed and was blamed for the loss.

Since this embarrassing loss, the offensive line has been overhauled and has been a positive for the team. The unit’s youthfulness will also be a key factor in keeping Mahomes around. Center Creed Humphrey was a rookie last year and was third in voting for rookie of the year, which is unheard of for a lineman. Humphrey is also the second-ranked center according to pff beating out four-time All-Pro Jason Kelce of the Eagles. This offensive line since being overhauled has been a beast of a unit and will continue to be so this season.

Strength Rating: 9

Coaching

Head Coach Andy Reid has been a part of this league for the entirety of the 21st century. Reid has been one of the most successful coaches in the league even during his time in Philadelphia. During his time there he took the team to four straight NFC Championship games three of those games having home-field advantage.

Reid is also one of the game’s great playbook designers. Whenever an offense is under Andy Reid’s control you can never rule anything out. He is one of the greatest offensive minds this game has ever seen. Ever since he took control in Kansas City it has been nothing but Championship or Bust.

Strength Rating: 9.5

Review

There is no surprise that the strongest parts of the Kansas City Chiefs roster this year is there offensive units. This has been the case the last few seasons but the team has been very successful. Andy Reid has shaped this team around Patrick Mahomes, and until something changes this is what this team will be about. As long as the defensive units can do their job and stay competitive, this offense will keep scoring points on any defense that stands in front of it.
