Justin Herbert Agrees to 5-Year, $262.5 Million Contract Extension

Date:

Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers have agreed to a huge contract extension. The new deal is worth a reported $262.5 million over five years, with some guarantees tied to it. He’ll be a Charger until 2029, barring unforeseen circumstances.

The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the news via Twitter on Tuesday evening.

Herbert was the sixth overall selection of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Chargers, and was the third quarterback taken, behind Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa. During his rookie year he was thrust into action due to mistake by the Chargers’ medical staff while tending to Tyrod Taylor. He would go on to win Offensive Rookie of the Year that season.

In his 49-game career so far, Herbert has thrown for 14,089 yards, 94 touchdowns and 35 interceptions. He was named to his first Pro Bowl in 2021, and made the playoffs for the first time in 2022. He and the Chargers were ousted by Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars despite putting up a 27-0 lead in the opening quarters of play.
