Introducing Web 3.0 to Smartphones – Are Solana and polygon coming together?

Date:

Cryptocurrency has been in a run for a while now and the key concern users have is the security of the private keys. Not only computers and laptops but also smartphones have been in this race for a long time. Our standard smartphones are vulnerable to hackers, as they don’t have any extra security for storing private keys. To overcome this problem, many developments were done and are still in process. Such a promise is made by Solana lately about releasing a Web 3.0 smartphone. However, there are several constraints that are slowing this process, such as the storage and performance of the mobile. So, is a Web 3.0 smartphone possible in reality?

Starting in 2019, Samsung introduced secure storage for private keys in the Galaxy S10 smartphone. They embedded blockchain-enabled mobile services for storing private keys. According to the press, Samsung Knox was the defense platform introduced for the security of private keys. However, not much information regarding the Knox platform was made available on the internet. This smartphone opened a gateway to Web 3.0 or the decentralized internet. Recently, Solana announced that they are developing their own blockchain phone, named Saga. The smartphone will comprise a Web 3.0 dApp store (Decentralised application store) Solana Pay to introduce their on-chain payments and storage for private keys. It is reported that the Solana Saga will be launched in 2023. Polygon has joined the Solana blockchain to bring Web 3.0 to smartphones with the new partnership with the startup Nothing. These two are working together to develop a blockchain-native smartphone.

The question is “Will Polygon and Solana be successful in bringing Web 3.0 to the mass audience via the Saga smartphone?”. The question is confusing as we look into the history of blockchain smartphones. As the suspense is still on, it would be interesting to see how they will integrate high requirements of security into small size smartphones. The cost of the phone is estimated to be near $1000 with 512 GB of storage. It will be a 6.67-inch OLED display and also is available for preorder with a $100 deposit. It was also reported that Solana will be working with other organisations also to bring this phone to life like the top NFT marketplace, the big wallet provider, Magic Eden, Phantom, decentralised finance platform, and Orca. However, this is not the first Web 3.0 smartphone. Earlier in 2018, Sirin Labs also promised to deliver a blockchain-native smartphone but was not able to fulfil it. Hence, all eyes will be on this smartphone with high expectations.
