Most people would choose to tie the knot on a beach or at a five-star resort. Still, Indian couple Shruti Nair and Anil Narasipuram chose to wed in the most technologically sophisticated manner possible. A blockchain marriage performed in another country-inspired Anil Narasipuram, the spouse, to pursue the marriage in his own country. Nair and Narasipuram, born and raised in Pune, tied the knot on November 15, 2021.

The pair opted to be married in a courtroom because of the widespread presence of Covid-19 in India. The ceremony was conducted by Anoop Pakki, who describes himself as a “digital priest.” Their families were able to join the wedding via Google Meet.

NFT on Ethereum Blockchain

The young couple from India utilized non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to digitally record their love for one another for eternity on the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain, which they will be able to access in perpetuity. 

The description of the NFT read:

“This contract is between Shruti Sathian Nair, born March 17, 1988, and Anil Mohan Narasipuram, born October 11, 1986. The parties to this agreement are hereby declared husband and wife, on November 15 2021 and to have to hold, in sickness and in health, for now and in perpetuity.”

When the digital priest on the OpenSea platform received the wedding vow, which was in the form of a digital picture, he had it minted as an NFT by the platform. During the Union Budget 2022, Indian finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed the introduction of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) and the imposition of a 30 percent cryptocurrency tax by 2022–23.
