The worst flooding in almost 100 years has been recorded in rivers in Russia and Kazakhstan. EcoWatch, established in 2005 in Ohio as an environmental newspaper, is now a digital platform focused on sharing high-quality, science-backed content about environmental topics, including problems, reasons, and potential solutions.

The flooding in Russia and Kazakhstan has led to major rivers overflowing and forcing over 120,000 people to evacuate their homes. This is the most severe flooding in some regions in almost 100 years.

People living near the 1,509-mile long Ural River in Russia and Kazakhstan had to leave their homes due to the rising water levels, as per Reuters.

Orenburg, a city in Russia with a population of approximately 550,000 people, experienced significant impact from the event.

Taisiya, a 71-year-old woman, told Reuters that the situation happened suddenly in the city located around 900 miles southeast of Moscow. She mentioned that she was unable to leave her home in time due to the rapid onset of the event at night.

Large parts of Orenburg were flooded when the Ural River overflowed due to melting snow, reaching a level that was considered unsafe by the authorities.

Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated that the flooding currently happening could be the largest disaster in terms of size and consequences in over 80 years, according to CNN.

The authorities in Orenburg reported that the flooding led to over 7,700 people being evacuated from nearly 13,000 residential properties.

According to the mayor, the water levels in the city increased to around 33 feet, surpassing the critical level of 30.5 feet.

It appeared that the flooding in the area was still ongoing and not close to being resolved.

According to CNN, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov informed reporters on Wednesday that the forecast is not looking good and the water level is still increasing in areas affected by floods.

Earlier this week, the city of Orsk, located downstream from Orenburg, experienced flooding due to the bursting of a dam embankment, as reported by BBC News.

Flooding typically occurs during the spring in Russia, but the magnitude of this particular event was unusual.

The most severe flooding occurred in northern Kazakhstan and the Russian Ural Mountains. Flooding also affected the southern parts of Western Siberia and some areas close to the Volga River, which is the largest river in Europe. This information was reported by Reuters.

As stated by the Ministry of Emergency Situations in Kazakhstan, rescue teams have successfully drained 310 million cubic feet of floodwaters.

Rescue teams explained that the severe flooding occurred due to a mix of saturated soil, large amounts of snow melting, quick rise in temperature, and intense rainfall.

People living in areas affected by flooding have reached out to the president for help. Additionally, social media posts captured protestors outside Orsk city hall expressing their discontent with the situation by shouting "Shame! Shame!" as per CNN's report.

In additional videos, protesters voiced their disapproval of the Mayor of Orsk, Vasily Kozupitsa.

One woman expressed disappointment that Kozupitsa was unable to provide food for emergency workers, so she and others took it upon themselves to feed them with pies, dumplings, and thermoses. This was reported by CNN.
