Gerresheimer set to expand manufacturing, jobs in Morganton, backed by $66M in federal funds

MORGANTON – The German manufacturer Gerresheimer AG, will expand in Morganton, North Carolina, backed in part by a funding partnership formed with the U.S. government.  Gerresheimer AG has an existing facility in Morganton manufacturers drug delivery systems for pharmaceutical, biotech, and cosmetics companies, according to a statement released by the company.

The agreement with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), itself a part of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), will allow the company to invest about $66 million in the Morganton facility in order to add and expand vial forming lines, the company said in a statement.  According to the statement, the funding partnership also comes with contracting support from the Department of Defense (DOD).

The company’s manufactured products include Type 1 and Gx Elite Glass vials, which the statement notes can be used in vaccination campaigns against infectious diseases, including COVID-19.

“Gerresheimer is honored to support the U.S. government in strengthening its pharmaceutical supply chain for current and future healthcare emergencies,” said Dietmar Siemssen, CEO of Gerresheimer AG, in the statement.

The region’s share of high-tech jobs increased, WRAL TechWire previously reported.  And the company expects to hire more workers as it expands its facility space, it noted in the statement.

Those jobs will assist the company in producing products for the healthcare sector.

“The agreement confirms our role as a supplier of system critical products, such as pharmaceutical primary packaging solutions and drug delivery systems for the healthcare sector,” he added.  “This investment follows our strategy process formula G and accelerates our growth in this important market.”

Gerresheimer AG will expand an existing facility, enlarging it to install the new vial forming lines.  The company will also add an additional warehouse.

While no specific numbers were shared by the company in its statement, it did note that it would be hiring additional workers.

“The investment will lead to an increase in the number of people employed, new offices will also be part of the expansion plan,” reads the company’s statement.

The project is supported by federal funds, under a specific agreement number, W58P05-22-2-0008, the company statement notes.
