Bitcoin Value Drops 4% as Mt Gox Payouts Start with Major BTC Transfer
Date:
On May 28, blockchain experts noticed that Mt. Gox was in the process of distributing funds. Approximately 42,900 BTC, valued at about $2.9 billion, was being transferred, although the total amount could potentially be as high as $6 billion.
Analyst James Check described the Mt. Gox incident as an excellent example of the effectiveness of on-chain data for Bitcoin.
At last, it looks like the distribution from Mt Gox is happening.
Approximately 42,900 Bitcoins are being transferred right now, with a value of about $2.94 billion.
Congratulations to the creditors; it must be immensely relieving to finally receive these coins. What a long and drawn-out story this has been. https://t.co/HQCYGhloo9 pic.twitter.com/O8nRqfQwn6

Mt. Gox appears to be getting ready to give its Bitcoin assets back to creditors ahead of the October 31 repayment deadline, which comes more than nine years after the exchange went under in 2014.
The business went bankrupt following a catastrophic cyberattack that resulted in the loss of 850,000 BTC, which was worth $460 million when the event occurred.
In February 2023, the major creditors of the insolvent cryptocurrency exchange opted for a payment method that would enable them to get a lump sum of their recovered funds in Bitcoin instead of traditional currency.
Experts had earlier cautioned that moving Bitcoin from the Mt. Gox period might unsettle the market and lead to a drop in BTC prices.
This seems to be occurring in Asian markets on Tuesday morning as cryptocurrency values dropped by 2.7%, bringing the total market capitalization down to $2.68 trillion.
Bitcoin Declines by 4%
During the Tuesday morning trading session in Asia, Bitcoin's price dropped by 4%, falling from a peak of $70,600 to a low of $67,555 over a span of about 12 hours.
At the time of writing, it had slightly rebounded, trading at $67,844 and remaining within its multi-month range-bound channel.
It is still uncertain if prices will decline more should creditors opt to sell off their assets immediately upon receiving them.
Trader "Bleeding Crypto" mentioned that he was watching for technical support levels at $65,000 and $61,450.
Bitcoin (BTC) Update: With the MtGox address moving funds, I'm focusing on two potential support levels. First, there's the 50-day Exponential Moving Average (50EMA) on the daily time frame. If that doesn't hold, the next level to watch is the reload Fibonacci zone. Let's hope one of these supports holds, otherwise things could get very messy.
