Generative Data Intelligence and IIHS Crash Test Findings: Unveiling the Safety Myths of Large SUVs

Three large SUVs undergo IIHS crash evaluations, with the Jeep Wagoneer emerging as the best – Autoblog

Date:

A persistent misconception in the car industry is that purchasing a big SUV enhances your safety. Although it's accurate that bigger, weightier vehicles can cause more harm to other drivers, the newest research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reveals that not every large SUV provides extra safety guarantees.

The IIHS evaluated three full-size SUVs: the Jeep Wagoneer (2023-2024 model), the Chevrolet Tahoe (2023-2024 model), and the Ford Expedition (2023-2024 model). Of these, only the Wagoneer received the Top Safety Pick accolade. However, it did not achieve the higher "plus" status because it did not sufficiently safeguard passengers in the back seat.

David Harkey, the President of IIHS, mentioned that while the significant weight of big SUVs offers extra safety during collisions with smaller cars, it also increases the risk they pose to other drivers. He added that the downside of their size is the greater impact force when they hit stationary objects such as trees, bridge supports, or the barriers used in their frontal crash assessments.

The Chevy Tahoe provided sufficient protection for the driver in a crash test focused on the driver's side. However, in the crash test for the passenger side, there was notable intrusion into the footwell area, increasing the risk of injury to the right foot and left leg. The Ford Expedition performed even worse in both assessments. During the driver-side test, the steering wheel partially came away from the instrument panel, and there was also footwell intrusion on the passenger side. Additionally, the A-pillar separated from the rocker panel in both tests.

Due to their frequent use for transporting families, the IIHS included an extra dummy in the back seat. Each of the three SUVs demonstrated notable dangers to backseat occupants, mainly due to strong seatbelt forces that could cause chest injuries. Among them, only the Expedition featured second-row seatbelt pretensioners designed to minimize passenger movement, but its side-curtain airbags in the second row did not activate.
