Generative Data Intelligence and Global Water Quality: Insights from Aberdeen’s International Workshop

Title: Intelligent Data Generation

Focus on Global Water Quality at Aberdeen Conference | Envirotec

Date:

Specialists in water quality from 17 nations will gather in Aberdeen next week for an international workshop spanning three days.

The James Hutton Institute is co-leading and hosting an event focused on exploring the latest advancements in water quality measurement. The event will highlight the use of cutting-edge sensors to accurately identify nutrients and chemicals in freshwater.

The workshop, scheduled from June 17 to June 19, will feature talks by specialists hailing from four different continents, including countries like Canada, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, and regions in Scandinavia. Additionally, participants will go on field excursions to observe river restoration and water quality monitoring sites located in Aberdeenshire.

Dr. Miriam Glendell, who co-organized the event and leads catchment modelling research at the Hutton, states, "We are delighted to hold the fifth workshop in this series at the Hutton. Our institution places significant emphasis on water-related studies, including water quality management and modelling, and we are home to Scotland's Hydro Nation International Centre."

"There are numerous developments in the ways we can track and comprehend pollutants in our waters and river catchments, including biological contaminants and new types like forever chemicals and pharmaceuticals."

"At this event, the emphasis will be on discussing how to effectively implement and utilize technological advancements, such as sensors and AI, and the data they generate. This will aid in enhancing knowledge, evidence, and expertise, which in turn will guide policies and practices to protect water bodies in Scotland, the UK, and globally."

The 5th International Workshop on High Temporal Resolution Water Quality Monitoring and Analysis is organized by the Hutton, Hydro Nation International Centre (located at the Hutton), the University of Stirling, and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The event receives sponsorship from Badger Meter, the parent company of the top-tier water quality sensor brand, s::can.

The excursion will feature tours of the Beltie Burn restoration initiative close to Torphins and the Hutton’s Glensaugh research farm. At these locations, they are evaluating and observing nature-based strategies like "leaky barriers" and riparian vegetation as part of the Environmental Change Network's ongoing data gathering. This event has been hosted in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and Ireland in the past.
