Initial "Computer Kit" Essentially Functioned as an Elaborate Calculator

We have a great appreciation for calculators, computers, and old magazines, so when we come across something that combines all three, we can't resist checking it out. In November 1966, Electronics Illustrated published a guide on how to construct what they called a "Space-Age Decimal Computer!" The project required neon lamps, a few tubes, and extensive soldering. The instructions begin on page 39, and the article makes it quite evident that this endeavor will be both costly and complex. However, the skills and utility you gain from completing the project will more than compensate for the investment!
Our contemporary understanding of a computer is quite different from how it was defined in earlier times. Many people may be aware that "Computer" used to be an actual job title. Individuals who held this position would manually compute and record extensive lists of numbers using pen and paper, and later, electromechanical devices. Consider the effort required to handle payroll for large corporations manually every month. The possibility of making mistakes was high and simply accepted as a part of business operations. With the advent of analog and later transistor-based computers, these machines took over the tasks of human computers, performing calculations and record-keeping. This shift in technology is the reason IBM was initially named the Computing, Recording and Tabulating Company.
When this article was written, the concept of a computer was primarily seen as a device for performing arithmetic operations. To the magazine’s audience, a machine capable of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing was essentially considered a computer. The kit described is a relatively ingenious yet straightforward device. It employs a rotary telephone dial to input numbers ranging from 1 to 10 (where 0 is treated as 10). This dial sends pulses to a series of boards that represent decimal places from the units digit up to the hundred-thousands place. A rotary switch is used to choose the specific decimal place to which a number is entered. Following the procedure of manual addition, you then dial in the second number, starting from the units place and moving upwards. The device automatically handles any carries, providing the result after each number is entered.
Since the machine is designed to only count upwards, it performs subtraction by incorporating complements. This process involves using the 9s complement of the number that needs to be subtracted, and the article provides an in-depth explanation of how the machine operates. Techniques like these were commonly used with electromechanical devices and would have been well-known to readers of that era. Naturally, multiplication and division are essentially repeated additions or subtractions, and handling long inputs could become quite laborious. Nevertheless, as long as the machine was built with precision and each number was recorded meticulously, it could serve as a highly effective tool to prevent errors!
