  • Buterin and Nailwal double funding for high-impact Covid research.
  • The duo prioritizes open-source solutions and airborne transmission control.
  • Long Covid research and viral persistence investigations take centre stage.

In a significant move to combat the global impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, Ethereum’s founder Vitalik Buterin and Crypto Relief’s Sandeep Nailwal are increasing their financial commitment to Covid-19 research.

Based on Vitalik’s tweet, the duo allocated $100 million to Covid research projects they believed were high-impact and necessary last year. Consequently, they’ve provided an additional $100 million, furthering these pivotal projects. As per the sources, the funds will be disbursed through Buterin’s entity, Kanro, using its multisig.

Significantly, the fight against Covid and future pandemics is a global issue. However, Buterin emphasizes that the solutions should be scientifically innovative and respect individual rights and freedoms. Hence, the focus is on medical and infrastructure work, advocating for open-source solutions.

Battling Airborne Transmission and Long Covid

Besides combating the virus itself, Buterin and Nailwal are putting a spotlight on the quality of indoor air. Considering Covid-19 is airborne, the duo invests in improving ventilation, HEPA filtering, and exploring experimental technologies such as UVC irradiation.

Moreover, they recognize the risk posed by Long Covid. Subsequently, research into Long Covid has been established as a primary focus area. Buterin believes viral persistence could cause long-term symptoms, which need more investigation.

Stepping Up the Funding

Crypto Relief has committed 90 million USDC from the original $SHIB donation to support this new initiative. Additionally, Buterin is throwing in an extra 10 million from his funds.

As pandemics pose an enormous risk in the 21st century, Buterin and Nailwal’s continued efforts to understand, prevent, and cure Covid-19 are imperative. They strive to live not only with airborne viruses but eventually without them, akin to how we eradicated cholera with clean water over a century ago.
