Devils Lose Assistant Coach Andrew Brunette to Predators

Date:

New Jersey Devils assistant coach Andrew Brunette accepted the Nashville Predators head coach job on Tuesday.

This comes courtesy of ESPN’s Kevin Weekes who first reported it on Twitter.

Brunette replaces former Devils head coach John Hynes. Hynes made the playoffs four times in his career, once with the Devils and three times with the Predators but he got knocked out in the first round every time. The Predators missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2013-14 season and felt they needed to make a coaching change.

Brunette was a Jack Adams nominee in the 2021-22 season with the Florida Panthers. He was a coveted coach on the market this offseason. He was also in charge of the Devils’ power play which underachieved given the talent they have. That being said, his modern approach led many to think he played a large role in their success.

The Devils lost Andrew Brunette because they’re retaining head coach Lindy Ruff. Brunette was ultimately after a head coaching job and that’s what Nashville offered. As for former Devils head coach John Hynes, he’s been connected to the New York Rangers according to Arthur Staple of The Athletic.

An announcement for Brunette will come later today according to Kevin Weekes.
