Detroit Pistons 2023 NBA Draft Profile

Date:

The 2023 NBA Draft takes place on Thursday, June 22, as both rounds are wrapped up in one night. As it approaches, TGH will be taking a quick look some teams’ draft strategies, and shedding some light on what direction they will go with their picks.. Here is the Detroit Pistons NBA Draft profile for 2023.

Summary

Detroit finished with the worst overall record at the end of the 2022-2023 season, winning just 17 games and losing 65. Obviously, that means they finished last in their division and the Eastern Conference. Head coach Dwayne Casey was let go at the end of the season, after posting the second-worst win-loss total in franchise history.

2023 Draft Picks

The Pistons have two picks in the 2023 NBA Draft.

First Round (one pick):

Second Round (one pick):

Team Needs

  • Wing defender
  • Overall depth

Projected Targets

Pick #5: Cam Whitmore, G/F, Villanova

The Pistons need some forward help in this draft, and Whitmore could be the guy to give it to them. Especially considering his overall versatility.

Looking at a profile for Whitmore, readers will find that there is next to no downside to grabbing him in this draft. He almost certainly will not be a complete bust, and, while the ceiling may look low, there is some true value in getting a combo forward/guard. He’ll need to polish up his shot selection and get more comfortable near the basket defensively, but Whitmore seems like the kind of smooth, plug-in player to help the Pistons right away.

Pick #31: Colby Jones, G, Xavier

Speaking of low-floor guys, Colby Jones should be available to Detroit at pick number 31.

Jones is ready to hop into an NBA lineup and give good minutes to any team. There is some great potential here on both offense and defense. A true team player, Jones is a threat to score and a willing defender. There’s not much more you could ask for at the top of the second round.
