Caldera, recognized as the top provider of Rollup-as-a-Service (RaaS), supports more than fifty EVM rollups. Some notable ones include Manta, Injective inEVM, Kinto, HYCHAIN, Treasure, and ApeChain, collectively protecting around $1 billion in total value locked.
In addition to their primary rollup framework, Caldera provides a collection of more than 50 integrations within the modular stack, as well as a variety of bespoke tools designed for users to utilize on different chains.
Guardian Nodes have recently been included in that list.
The Context
Currently, most Layer 1 blockchains function on a proof-of-stake system, where network participants are motivated through rewards to contribute their stake and verify the blockchain.
This reward system promotes decentralization by motivating individual stakers to run trustworthy validators and penalizing those who fail to do so, resulting in a very high expense for anyone trying to attack the network and undermine its security.
Distributing Rollups
EVM rollups have nearly addressed the scalability issue, with Ethereum’s L2s and L3s allowing for practically unlimited scaling. However, there remains a lack of motivation for trustworthy network members to oversee these rollups.
Caldera’s Guardian Nodes empower teams to distribute their rollups across a decentralized network. This is achieved by letting users validate blocks and safeguard the network, earning rewards in return. The process involves a new “light verifier” integrated into Arbitrum rollups. This verifier enables Guardian Node operators to confirm Nitro batches using standard hardware, eliminating the need for a full node.
Groups can initiate Guardian Nodes for their users via a “Node Sale,” which allocates “keys” that verify a node’s qualification to file claims and receive rewards. This process allows buyers to manage a Guardian Node on a specific rollup.
HYCHAIN, the pioneering group to utilize this platform, secured more than $8 million through over 16,000 node keys within a two-week period, dramatically enhancing their community and creating substantial income for their initiative.
Allowing additional participants to monitor a rollup and detect any harmful actions strengthens the network's security, which is essential for ensuring trust in the accuracy of the blockchain. As a result, there is an increased need for the rollup’s native token, as it is necessary for users to engage in validation processes and contributes to the network’s practical cryptoeconomic security.
Guardian Nodes add another achievement to Caldera’s already impressive infrastructure offerings. Following the successful launch of HYCHAIN, we anticipate that more teams working on rollups will take advantage of this groundbreaking product in the near future.
