Medium, an American online publishing platform, announced that it would accept articles written with the help of an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot like ChatGPT. Recently, the hype surrounding AI chatbots has reached its peak due to ChatGPT, and the world is trying to shape a narrative for its use.

Medium allows anyone to create a blog and sell exclusive content through a membership. Scott Lamb, the company’s VP of content, announced the new policy in a blog post on its own website.
“We welcome the responsible use of AI-assistive technology on Medium. To promote transparency, and help set reader expectations, we require that any story created with AI assistance be clearly labeled as such,” wrote Lamb.
Following the Medium Community’s feedback on AI-generated writing last month, Lamb indicated that this is an initial approach. Lamb also stressed that the company’s policy may change according to the technology.

“We believe that creating a culture of disclosure, where the shared expectation of good citizenship is that AI-generated content is disclosed, empowers readers. It allows them to choose their own reaction to, and engagement with, this kind of work, and clearly understand whether a story is machine- or human-written,” wrote Lamb.
‘Non-Disclosed Content Won’t Be Promoted’
As a result of feedback from the community, Medium has decided not to promote content that has been written with the help of chatbots but has not been disclosed through its recommendation feature. Various publications and writers associated with medium has already banned the AI writing tools.

There is a growing concern around AI-generated content and its potential impact on transparency and disclosure. In response to this, Medium has taken the initiative to update its distribution standards to include specific guidelines for AI-generated content.
Human Authors Only
However, some of the publishers on Medium have already banned AI-generated articles.
The second most followed publication on Medium, Towards Data Science, with more than 645k followers, is said, “Committed to publishing work by human authors only.”
A respondent said that “signed up to pay human their worth for doing real work,” in a response to Medium’s survey.
Fanfare, a publisher on Medium, and it is rejecting the use of AI-generated content which in turn will lead to being blocked from access.

“Any aspiring writers who submits AI content will be barred at the gates like the uncivilized barbarians they are,” said Eric Pierce, Editor of Fanfare.
The publisher has announced that any writer currently associated with Fanfare who submits an AI-generated story will be immediately dismissed from the platform.
They believe that AI-generated stories lack the human touch and depth of emotion that truly resonates with readers.
“Any current Fanfare writer that submits an AI-generated story will likewise be shown the exit. No second chances, no redos. That may sound harsh but I want to be completely clear on this,” said Pierce.
The use of AI in the writing and publishing industries is still in its initial phases as the experiments continue. Medium is now accepting AI-generated articles; however, CNET recently discontinued using AI to write articles due to numerous errors.
